Breast augmentation in Germany: what patients report

Updated

Before a woman decides on surgery, she reads other people’s stories, and she is right to: a review says what no description of the technique ever does. Reviews of breast augmentation in Germany show how the consultation went, what hurt and how long the waiting was.

Below: what to look for in such reviews, which are useless and what to ask before surgery; the operation itself is covered under breast augmentation in Germany. There are no reviews from our patients about breast augmentation here yet: each will appear only with the author’s written consent and to the extent she allows, and we will not invent them.

What patients usually write about

Three subjects come up most often: the conversation with the surgeon beforehand (measurements, trying out sizes, the difference between an implant and the woman’s own fat), the organisation (dates, interpreter, documents) and the first days after surgery.

Another frequent subject in reviews of German hospitals is what felt unfamiliar: a written consent form that lists the risks, the questions about smoking and about blood-thinning medicines, the compulsory breast examination before surgery, and the fact that a surgeon may decline or propose a different extent of surgery.

Read between the lines, too: a review is written in the heat of the moment, a month later the feeling is different, and the final shape of the breast is not visible at once. So reviews written after a week and after a year are equally useful. How to read such stories in general: see reviews of treatment in Germany.

How to tell a real review from an advertisement

A real review is detailed and uneven; an advertisement is smooth. It gives itself away through enthusiastic generalities without a single detail, the hospital’s virtues listed in the same order as on its own website, an exact price with an invitation to get in touch, and no difficulties at all.

A real review rests on specifics: what was asked at the consultation, when the drain came out, which compression bra was used, how long the swelling lasted. It mentions what was unpleasant calmly and answers the question «what would I do differently».

Look for such reviews on platforms that verify that treatment took place, in patient forums and in specialist communities. Before-and-after photographs on the internet are not reviews: they are taken in different light and postures, and another woman’s breast does not predict your own result. On hospitals as a whole, see reviews of German hospitals.

What patients complain about and what they praise

Complaints mostly concern a recovery harder than expected; praise goes to clear arrangements and honest talk. Frequent complaints are swelling worse than expected, tightness and heaviness in the first days, the ban on sport and on lifting that forced plans to change, and the strictness about compression garments.

Frequent reasons for praise are a clear schedule of appointments, a written report handed over, the possibility of contacting the department with a question, and an explanation of the risks without softening.

Reviews also mention repeat operations, or revisions: for capsular contracture (the scar-tissue shell around the implant hardening), asymmetry or implant displacement; some describe changed sensation. This is not rare and nobody’s fault but part of the subject, and in Germany it is discussed before surgery rather than after.

What to ask before surgery

Before surgery, ask the surgeon and the organiser what no stranger’s review can tell you:

  • who will actually operate and how often they do this operation;
  • which incision and which implant position are proposed, and why;
  • what happens to breast screening in future;
  • how many appointments there are before and after, and who follows you at home;
  • what the written estimate includes and what is billed separately;
  • on what terms a correction is done.

The patient herself brings the ultrasound or mammography results and discharge letters, mentions her medicines and allergies, plans enough days in Germany for the check before the flight and arranges for someone to come along. The bill is explained under cost of breast augmentation in Germany, and a doctor’s qualifications under choosing a breast augmentation surgeon.

Frequently asked questions

Can reviews of breast augmentation be trusted?

Yes, for what the author saw herself: the consultation, the trip and the first days after surgery. Her result is no forecast for yours: that depends on your tissues, the implant and the plan the surgeon makes after examining you in person. So take questions for your doctor from a review, not a ready-made decision.

Can I talk to a woman who has already had breast augmentation?

You can ask the coordinator whether there is a patient willing to talk about her experience. Such a conversation is possible only with her consent and to the extent she chooses, so nobody can promise it in advance. If someone is found, ask about facts: what was explained before surgery, how the first days went, what she would do differently.

What if reviews of breast augmentation at one clinic contradict each other?

Compare facts, not moods. Two women may have come with different expectations, seen different doctors there and written at different times, a week or a year after surgery. Details repeated in several reviews, such as how the risks were explained or how contact with the department worked, deserve more trust than one person’s delight or resentment.

How AlenMed arranges breast augmentation and handles feedback

AlenMed sends the documents to the clinic, arranges the trip and stays in touch afterwards. The photographs and letters go to a plastic surgery clinic, and the doctor answers what is under discussion and what examination is needed on site. Then come a written estimate, a visa invitation, the consultation and the operation booked back to back, and an interpreter at appointments. Among the partners that do aesthetic breast surgery is the Villa Bella plastic surgery clinic in Munich, where this work is done by Dr Nadja Zimmer and Dr Sebastian Pretzsch among others.

Feedback works like this: the patient is called after she is home, and her questions and complaints are taken up with the hospital. A review is published only if the patient wishes, with her written consent and to the extent she allows; never without her consent.

This material is for information only and is not an offer. The indication and the extent of surgery are decided by a doctor at an in-person consultation.
