Alen and AlenMed are the same company: AlenMed, with its office in Munich, has arranged treatment at German hospitals for patients from other countries since 2010. Alen is simply the short form of the name. We handle everything except the treatment itself.
Our office at Funkerstraße 5, 80636 München is not a virtual address or a representative office but the place where the people handling each case sit. Below: what we do, how we choose a hospital, how the money works and who looks after the patient.
What AlenMed does and what it does not
We do not treat — our work is everything around the treatment. AlenMed does not make diagnoses, judge prognosis or argue with prescriptions: that belongs to the hospital and the doctor, and we want this line clear from the start.
That means understanding your situation, finding a hospital and doctor who deal with your condition in earnest, translating the documents, obtaining the hospital’s answer and cost estimate, arranging the visa invitation, meeting you, settling you in, accompanying you at appointments and translating the discharge report into your language. The whole organisational side comes off the patient and the family, so that their strength goes into treatment, not into correspondence with a foreign hospital in a foreign language.
How AlenMed chooses a hospital and a doctor
We choose the hospital and doctor for the specific condition, anywhere in Germany: the AlenMed network covers 86 partner hospitals in 38 German cities and 345 doctors with profiles on the site — university and general hospitals, specialist centres and rehabilitation clinics. You can look up the partner hospitals in Germany and their doctors before you even write to us.
We keep no ranking of “the best hospitals in Germany” and do not recommend a hospital because it is easier to work with. The choice rests on checkable criteria: whether the department treats your condition as its main field, relevant certification of the centre, its equipment, and how regularly the procedure you need is performed there.
The second criterion is a complete route: assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and follow-up within one organisation, so the patient does not move between cities and the doctors see the whole picture. The third is what the estimate actually includes for its price. An expensive hospital does not mean a suitable one, and the cheapest estimate often turns out to be incomplete.
Money: the hospital’s invoice, paid directly
One rule applies: the patient pays the hospital directly, against its own invoice, calculated at the German tariff for private patients. Doctors’ fees on that invoice follow the GOÄ, the official German schedule of medical fees, which gives each service a set number of points. We do not take payment for treatment and do not add a mark-up to medical invoices. Any unused part of the deposit is returned by the hospital to the patient.
The cost of our organising work is discussed separately and in advance. The first consultation is free and commits you to nothing. If the documents show that travelling is unnecessary, or that the treatment you need is available closer to home, we say so plainly. What goes into a hospital’s estimate is explained under cost of treatment in Germany.
Who handles the patient’s case
Each patient has a named member of staff who speaks their language and handles the case from the first email until the return home, so the story never has to be retold. They can be reached outside working hours too: at the hospital, questions come up in the evening and at weekends as often as on a Monday morning.
A film about how AlenMed works shows this in practice: the clinic, rehabilitation and meeting the patient in Munich, where our office is. It runs three minutes and is narrated in English. Patients’ own accounts are on the patient testimonials page.
Frequently asked questions
How can I check that AlenMed is a real company?
Check three things: the office address, who you pay for treatment and the terms of the first consultation. AlenMed’s office is at Funkerstraße 5, 80636 München — not a virtual address but where the people handling the cases work. You pay for treatment to the hospital, not to us. And the first consultation is free and commits you to nothing.
If AlenMed’s office is in Munich, will I be treated in Munich?
No: only the company’s office is in Munich; the hospital is chosen from 86 partner hospitals in 38 cities across Germany. What decides the city is where a department treats your condition as its main field, performs the procedure you need regularly and covers assessment, treatment and rehabilitation within one organisation.
Do I need to speak German to be treated through AlenMed?
No. A named member of staff who speaks your language handles your case from the first email until you are back home. We translate the documents, accompany you at appointments, translate the discharge report and handle the correspondence with the hospital, so you never have to deal with it in a foreign language.
How much does AlenMed charge for its services?
The cost of AlenMed’s organising work is discussed separately and in advance, and the first consultation is free. Treatment is not part of that fee: the patient pays the hospital directly, against its own invoice. We take no money for treatment and add nothing to medical invoices, so our fee and the hospital’s bill never mix.
How AlenMed arranges treatment: where to begin
Begin with an email: describe the situation briefly and attach the latest medical documents. We will look at what there is and say what is missing for the hospital to give a substantive answer.
Then it goes step by step: we translate the documents and send the enquiry to one hospital or several; the doctor answers, the hospital sends its estimate, and the patient decides. If the answer is yes, AlenMed arranges the visa invitation, meets the patient after the flight, settles them in, accompanies them at appointments, translates the discharge report and, once the patient is home, keeps the line to the hospital open. The stages are described under arranging treatment in Germany, our office address under AlenMed contacts in Munich.
This material is for information only and does not replace a consultation with a doctor. This material is not an offer. The company provides organisational and translation services and does not practise medicine. Whether treatment is possible, what it will involve and what it will achieve can be determined only after an examination at the clinic in person.
