Endometriosis Specialists in Germany: How to Find the Right One

Updated

Germany has no official top 10 of endometriosis specialists, but it has a working answer: a gynaecologist with a documented focus on the disease, who operates regularly in a team with surgery, pain medicine and reproductive medicine. Women told for years that severe period pain is normal usually start by searching «best endometriosis doctors».

Below is what the title means in German practice, how a certified centre works, which doctors and clinics are active, what to bring to the first appointment and what no doctor can promise. The disease itself is covered in Endometriosis treatment in Germany.

What an Endometriosis Specialist Means in Germany

An endometriosis specialist in Germany is a gynaecologist who has built a focus on this disease, as no separate speciality exists. Within gynaecology in Germany, such doctors train in gynaecology and obstetrics (Facharzt für Frauenheilkunde und Geburtshilfe) and usually reach endometriosis through operative and minimally invasive surgery.

The focus shows when it can be checked: the doctor works at a clinic with an endometriosis centre, the clinic states the number and type of its operations, and laparoscopy, a camera look inside the abdomen, is routine rather than occasional, since laparoscopy with a tissue sample may be needed to confirm the diagnosis.

The search drags on because the pain is repeatedly called normal. In a study at major German and Austrian hospitals, half the women waited over ten years for a diagnosis, almost three in four first got a wrong one, and their own habit of treating painful periods as normal added to the delay. The World Health Organization stresses that chronic pelvic pain from endometriosis is not normal. So a second opinion from a German doctor who sees the disease weekly changes more than another painkiller.

Is There a Real Top 10 List of Endometriosis Doctors

No official one exists: people search for «top 10 endometriosis specialists», but such lists come from portals and magazines and rest on reputation surveys, recommendations, reviews and sometimes paid placement, not treatment results. So the same names travel from list to list, showing fame rather than last year’s endometriosis operations.

Instead, check certification by the Endometriosis Research Foundation (Stiftung Endometriose-Forschung, SEF) and the European Endometriosis League, audited by EuroEndoCert, in three types: an Endometriosepraxis examines and advises; an Endometrioseklinik also operates and must work with pathology, radiology, abdominal surgery and urology; an Endometriosezentrum adds reproductive medicine, a pain clinic, rehabilitation and research. Then come operation figures, the doctor’s stated focus, society memberships and one practical test: will the doctor read your old operation reports before promising anything?

Doctors and Centres Working in This Field

Real examples of how the work is organised in Germany follow; this is not a ranking.

  • Prof. Marc Thill, medical director of the AGAPLESION Frankfurter Diakonie Kliniken, is chief physician of gynaecology and gynaecological oncology at the Markus Hospital in Frankfurt and trained as a DaVinci robotic surgeon in 2018. He once headed the hospital’s endometriosis centre; its SEF-certified endometriosis clinic is now led by a senior physician.
  • Helios Klinikum München West, a hospital with 412 beds in western Munich, runs a centre for endoscopy and endometriosis (Zentrum für Endoskopie und Endometriose) treating both mild peritoneal and deep infiltrating endometriosis.
  • Kinderwunsch Centrum München is a fertility centre led by Prof. Wolfgang Würfel, a specialist in gynaecological endocrinology and reproductive medicine with an additional qualification in operative gynaecology. It operates on endometriosis itself and, if a child is still wanted, agrees on surgery or IVF jointly.

Deep infiltrating endometriosis of the bowel or bladder is operated on by a team rather than one gynaecologist, so ask which visceral surgeons and urologists will be in theatre. If you plan a pregnancy, choose a place where reproductive medicine is involved before surgery is decided. For a particular city, see pages such as endometriosis specialist in Berlin.

What to Prepare for the First Consultation

Bring documents, a pain diary and questions. Full operation reports, not summaries, show the surgeon what was removed and what was left. Add histology, pelvic MRI and transvaginal ultrasound on disc, and the hormonal treatments tried, with dates and why each was stopped.

A pain diary notes where it hurts, the link to the cycle, pain with bowel movements, urination or intercourse, and changes over the years. This description often decides which imaging is ordered and which surgical plan is discussed.

Ask how many endometriosis operations the team does a year; whether bowel or bladder involvement is expected and who would operate; what follows surgery, since the disease can return even after lesions are removed; and how fertility plans change the approach. And honestly: no doctor can promise the pain will go for good.

Frequently asked questions

How is an endometriosis specialist different from a general gynaecologist?

Through experience and teamwork, not the diploma: both are trained in gynaecology and obstetrics. The specialist sees the disease constantly, performs complex laparoscopies and operates with bowel surgeons and urologists when needed. A general gynaecologist can suspect endometriosis and start treatment, but persistent pain calls for a specialist’s view.

Do I need a professor for endometriosis?

Not necessarily. In Germany, the professor title reflects research and teaching, not how many endometriosis operations a doctor performs. A certified endometriosis clinic can be led by a senior physician, as at the Markus Hospital in Frankfurt. What matters more: the team’s number of such operations, the clinic’s certificate and who will operate on you.

What if the pain returns after an operation?

Show the operation reports and histology to a specialist who performs repeat endometriosis surgery. Lesions can recur even after successful removal, so recurrence does not prove the first operation failed. Repeat surgery needs careful planning, since repeated procedures can damage the tubes and ovaries; if you want children, reproductive medicine joins the decision.

How AlenMed Arranges Treatment

AlenMed starts with the documents: operation reports, histology and imaging go to the doctors in German translation. The clinic says whether the case fits its profile, proposes a plan and issues a cost estimate with the official visa invitation; if surgery is likely, the estimate names the planned scope and is recalculated if findings differ.

AlenMed has 86 partner hospitals in 38 cities and 345 doctors; its office is in Munich. Departments with this focus exist nationwide, so the search follows the doctor and the free slot, not the city. A coordinator meets the patient, interprets at consultations and collects the discharge report.

This material is for information only and is not an offer; the treatment plan is set by a doctor at an in-person consultation.
