Liposuction in Frankfurt

Updated

Liposuction removes local pockets of fat that persist at a stable weight, and it replaces neither diet nor training. It reshapes one area, not the number on the scales, and much depends on how elastic the skin is.

This page covers who the operation suits, the techniques, choosing a clinic and a surgeon in Frankfurt and the trip itself, and ends with what AlenMed does when you plan liposuction in Frankfurt, Germany.

When the operation makes sense

The operation makes sense when your weight has held for months and the fat sits locally: on the abdomen, flanks, thighs, back or chin. The skin should be elastic enough to settle onto the new contour, and any chronic illness should be under control.

Something else is discussed first when the skin is visibly lax after weight loss or pregnancy, where liposuction alone is not enough, and with an unstable weight, smoking, clotting disorders or medicines that affect the blood. Liposuction does not treat obesity, and the volume removed is limited by safety, not the patient’s wishes: the more fat comes out at once, the more fluid and blood the body loses.

Lipoedema, a painful excess of fatty tissue on the legs and occasionally the arms, is a separate story with a medical indication: doctors and the insurer decide the route and the payment, and German statutory insurers pay only under certain conditions. The general page on liposuction in Germany describes the operation itself.

Techniques, and why the surgeon makes the choice

There are several techniques, the surgeon chooses between them, and the tumescent technique is the basis: a solution of anaesthetic and vessel-constricting adrenaline is infiltrated into the area, then the fat is aspirated through thin cannulas. This makes some operations possible without a general anaesthetic.

Power-assisted, laser-assisted and ultrasound-assisted techniques use different equipment and take different lengths of time in theatre. A vibrating cannula removes fat faster; a laser destroys fat cells before aspiration and is often used on small areas; ultrasound, rarely used today, serves mainly for dense tissue such as the back and takes longer. The choice follows the area and skin quality, so it rests with the surgeon. Be wary of advertising that promises the same result «without surgery»: a research review found that non-invasive devices have not yet come close to liposuction results. There is a separate page on laser liposuction.

How the clinic and the surgeon are chosen in Frankfurt

In Frankfurt the choice of clinic comes down to the surgeon: the main criterion is the operating doctor’s qualification. In Germany the title that counts is specialist in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery; some doctors hold the earlier title in plastic and aesthetic surgery. The label «cosmetic surgeon» is no guarantee in itself: the title has no legal protection, and any doctor can use it. Ask how many operations in this area the doctor performs, and ask to see the doctor’s own results.

AlenMed’s partner hospitals in Frankfurt include Frankfurt University Hospital (Universitätsklinikum Frankfurt), Krankenhaus Nordwest, Bürgerhospital Frankfurt and the Agaplesion Frankfurter Diakonie Kliniken, all described in the overview of hospitals in Frankfurt. The department and the surgeon are named by the hospital itself when it answers the enquiry; until then, nobody can say where or by whom the operation would be done.

Before flying, hold a written plan of the procedure, the type of anaesthesia, a written estimate and the date of the follow-up appointment. For clinics that carry out such operations, see plastic surgery clinics in Germany.

The short trip and how it is usually put together

The trip is built around the clinic’s schedule, not the flights: Frankfurt has a major airport with direct flights, so the journey takes less time than the waiting at the clinic. But a pause between consultation and surgery may be the clinic’s rule, so planning it all as a single day is a mistake.

The operation itself is a day case or a single night in the clinic. The compression garment goes on in theatre and is worn as long as the surgeon says; swelling and bruising last through the first weeks, and exertion and sport are limited for as long as the clinic prescribes.

A follow-up appointment comes before departure, and the return date is agreed with the doctor; the final contour takes months to settle. Surgery and recovery are described on the patient page of the German Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (in German), and the bill is explained under liposuction prices in Germany.

Frequently asked questions

Can liposuction help me lose weight?

No: liposuction removes local pockets of fat, not excess weight, and it does not treat obesity. How much can be removed in one operation is limited by safety. It suits people whose weight has held for months while fat stays on the abdomen, thighs or chin; if your weight is still changing, the surgeon will probably suggest stabilising it first.

Can liposuction be done under local anaesthesia?

Yes, some operations can: the tumescent solution already contains an anaesthetic, and for the hips and legs local anaesthesia is sometimes enough. Several areas or a large volume usually need a general anaesthetic. The surgeon and the anaesthetist decide after the examination, and the type of anaesthesia belongs in the written plan before you fly.

How long should the trip to Frankfurt for liposuction be?

The clinic sets the exact number of days, depending on the pause between consultation and surgery, the extent of the operation and the follow-up date. The operation usually means a day or one night in the clinic, but flying home straight afterwards is unwise. Book the return flight with a margin, once the doctor confirms at the check-up that you can travel.

How AlenMed arranges liposuction in Frankfurt

AlenMed forwards your description of the task and photographs of the areas to a partner clinic, which sends back an appointment date, the operating doctor’s name and a written cost estimate. AlenMed has 86 partner hospitals in 38 German cities and 345 doctors, and its office is in Munich. An interpreter joins you at the appointment; we also help with the visa and accommodation.

Ask in advance who will operate and with what specialist title, which areas are in the plan, what kind of anaesthesia is planned, how many nights you will stay, what aftercare is included and how a correction would be charged.

This page is for information, not an offer; a doctor who examines you in person sets the extent of the operation.
