Anyone looking up liposuction prices in Germany wants one figure and gets an estimate: the clinic prices the operation for a particular patient and particular areas, the most common being the abdomen. Liposuction removes local fat deposits; it is not a way to lose weight or a treatment for obesity.
No sum can be named before a consultation: it depends on volume, the number of areas, skin quality and the type of anaesthesia. Below are the estimate’s lines and the extras for the travel budget.
Who Liposuction Suits — and Who Needs a Different Operation
Liposuction suits people with a stable weight, elastic skin and a local fat deposit that does not respond to diet and exercise.
If the skin is stretched after pregnancy or weight loss, or the abdominal muscles have separated, the surgeon will suggest a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) — a different operation with a different estimate. Fat inside the abdominal cavity cannot be removed by liposuction. See plastic surgery in Germany.
What Makes Up Liposuction Prices in Germany
Liposuction prices in Germany are made up of the surgeon’s fee, anaesthesia, the theatre and aftercare. Doctors in Germany bill under the GOÄ, the official scale of fees for doctors, for aesthetic operations too, as it covers services beyond medical necessity provided at the patient’s request (§ 1). Each service has points with a fixed point value; the rate is multiplied by a factor of 1 to 3.5, as a rule no higher than 2.3, and above that only for particular difficulty or time, with a written justification (§§ 5, 12). Unlisted services are billed by analogy (§ 6); a different fee needs a written agreement before the operation (§ 2).
The second part is anaesthesia. In local tumescent anaesthesia the abdomen is filled with plenty of fluid containing a local anaesthetic, so the tissue swells and goes numb, hence the name. Alternatives are sedation, a drug-induced light sleep, or general anaesthesia, which add an anaesthetist to the estimate. Theatre and materials are separate lines, and a larger volume adds a night in the clinic.
After surgery come the compression garment, dressings and follow-up visits. Then there is VAT: medical treatment is exempt (§ 4 Nr. 14 UStG), and under Federal Fiscal Court (BFH) rulings an aesthetic operation counts as treatment only if an illness, injury or congenital defect requires it. So an aesthetic operation without a medical indication is subject to German VAT at 19% (§ 12 UStG); check that the estimate shows it as a separate line. For other operations, see plastic surgery prices.
| Cost item | What it depends on | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Surgeon’s consultation | included in the price or not | per the clinic’s estimate |
| Surgeon’s fee (GOÄ) | areas, volume, duration, multiplier | per the clinic’s estimate |
| Anaesthesia | local, sedation or general | per the clinic’s estimate |
| Theatre and materials | duration, equipment | per the clinic’s estimate |
| Night in the clinic | volume | per the clinic’s estimate |
| Garment, dressings, follow-ups | areas and visits | per the clinic’s estimate |
| VAT | medical indication or not | 19% without a medical indication |
Liposuction Techniques and How They Affect the Estimate
The technique affects the estimate through equipment and operating time; the basis is the tumescent technique, in which the area is filled with fluid before the fat is suctioned out through a cannula. In power-assisted liposuction (PAL) a device moves the cannula rapidly back and forth, easing the surgeon’s work; in water-jet-assisted liposuction (WAL) fluid is sprayed in small amounts in a fan shape, the jet gently loosening the fat for suction.
The surgeon chooses the technique according to tissue and volume. Differences in the estimate come from equipment and operating time, not from one method being “better”, and none promises a particular result.
Recovery and Costs After Surgery
In the first days there is swelling and bruising, and the compression garment is worn for several weeks — the surgeon sets the period. Complications are uncommon but possible: fluid collecting under the skin (seroma) and contour irregularities. Details are in the patient information of the German Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (DGPRÄC).
Budget for the days until the follow-up visit — the DGPRÄC considers one sensible a week after the operation, when the stitches come out — and accommodation for that time. You fly home once the surgeon allows it; also budget for a later visit or a video consultation.
Frequently asked questions
Why do clinics quote different prices for liposuction?
Because estimates are put together differently: some clinics quote one total price, others list the surgeon’s fee, anaesthesia, theatre and the clinic stay separately. The anaesthesia, technique, follow-up visits and VAT treatment also differ. Compare what each estimate contains, such as the areas treated, rather than the final figure.
Is VAT included in the price of liposuction?
It depends on the estimate: VAT is charged on aesthetic liposuction in Germany, but the clinic may include it or show it as a separate line, so check before paying. The standard rate applies because an operation for shape is not medical treatment; procedures required by an illness, injury or congenital defect are exempt.
Does insurance pay for liposuction?
For aesthetic liposuction, as a rule, no: German statutory health insurance funds pay for treating illness (§ 27 SGB V), not for changing shape. The exception is lipoedema, a painful increase in fatty tissue on the legs and sometimes the arms: under a G-BA decision the funds cover liposuction for it at any stage if six months of conservative treatment have not helped.
How AlenMed Organises Liposuction in Germany
AlenMed starts at a distance: you send photos of the area and a health questionnaire, the surgeon gives a preliminary assessment, and the final decision follows a face-to-face consultation. In Munich, one example is the Villa Bella clinic, where the plastic surgeons Dr Fabian Patzschke, Dr Maximilian Chlosta and Dr Nadja Zimmer perform liposuction and body contouring. Another is the Department of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery at Diakonie Hospital Stuttgart, where Prof. Frank Werdin is one of two chief physicians and the hospital’s senior medical director.
The clinic sends its estimate before the trip: if insurance does not cover the costs, it must state the expected amount in text form before treatment (§ 630c BGB). You pay the clinic directly; many German hospitals work with patients from abroad on a prepayment basis, and AlenMed’s fee is a separate line. We arrange airport pick-up and accommodation; for the rest, see arranging treatment in Germany.
This material is for reference only and is not an offer: the indication and extent of surgery are decided by the surgeon at a face-to-face consultation.
