Wart removal in Germany is an outpatient procedure with a dermatologist: as a guide, the first consultation with dermoscopy costs €150 to €300 and each additional wart removed at the same visit €30 to €70. Warts are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV); the soft stalked “papillomas” on the neck, in the armpits or on the eyelids are usually harmless skin tags. As in all dermatology in Germany, removal starts with an examination through a dermoscope, a lit magnifier, so that nothing dangerous is missed.
This page covers the methods, indicative prices and the steps for a patient from abroad. The clinic names the final amount after the examination.
Warts and Papillomas: Not the Same Growth
A wart is a viral growth caused by HPV, whereas a soft stalked “papilloma” is usually a skin tag, a harmless overgrowth of skin. Common warts appear on the fingers, plantar warts on the soles and flat warts on the face. Many clear up on their own, so the doctor may start with freezing (liquid nitrogen) or a prescribed solution instead of cutting; stubborn plantar warts may need several sessions. In a Cochrane review of topical treatments for cutaneous warts, nothing proved more reliable than salicylic acid and freezing, and the benefit of salicylic acid was modest.
Genital warts are sexually transmitted and treated differently: they are a separate conversation with a dermatologist, gynaecologist or urologist, who should see them before any treatment.
Removal Methods: Laser, Radiofrequency, Freezing and Excision
The method depends on the growth and on whether its tissue must be examined. A laser vaporises tissue layer by layer while sealing small vessels, but vaporised tissue cannot go for histology, the examination under a microscope, so with any doubt the doctor excises instead.
Stalked growths are removed with a radiofrequency loop or by electrocautery, burning through the stalk with an electric current. Warts are frozen with liquid nitrogen (cryotherapy), which destroys the wart cells.
Surgical excision with a cosmetic stitch suits larger or suspicious lesions, because all the tissue goes to the laboratory. Whatever the method, the procedure takes fifteen to sixty minutes. The doctor explains scab care and how long to avoid sauna and sun. No one can promise a growth will not return: viral warts can come back.
Why Pharmacy Wart Treatments Are Not the First Step
Pharmacy wart treatments are made for ordinary warts on the hands and feet and can do harm elsewhere. On the face, eyelids, neck or genitals, over-the-counter acids and freezing sprays can burn the skin and leave scars, and their instructions usually rule these areas out.
The main reason to see a doctor first: a “papilloma” can turn out to be skin cancer, such as a basal cell carcinoma or melanoma. Burning it off destroys the tissue that needed testing and delays the diagnosis. With doubts, the next step is skin cancer screening; a confirmed tumour means basal cell carcinoma treatment or melanoma care, not a cosmetic procedure.
What Wart and Papilloma Removal Costs
Removing a single small papilloma by laser or radiofrequency costs about €80 to €150 plus the consultation, and a patient from abroad pays privately. Fees follow the GOÄ, the official scale of doctors’ fees. The GOÄ multiplier reflects the difficulty and time of the work, and a professor or head of department bills at a higher one. The same rules shape the cost of treatment in Germany for other procedures.
Indicative amounts under the GOÄ for the main items, a price range rather than one clinic’s price list:
| Cost item | What it depends on | Indicative |
|---|---|---|
| Primary dermatologist consultation with digital dermoscopy | Difficulty and length of the visit; higher for a professor or head of department | €150 to €300 |
| Laser or radiofrequency removal of a single papilloma (up to 3 mm) | Area (eyelids, lips, skin folds), local anaesthetic | €80 to €150 |
| Removal of multiple papillomas or warts (per additional lesion) | Number of lesions removed at one visit | €30 to €70 |
| Surgical excision of a skin lesion with cosmetic suturing | Location of the lesion, local anaesthetic | €250 to €500 |
| Histological laboratory examination of excised tissue | Needed when the doctor is unsure what the lesion is | €100 to €200 |
The total moves with the number of lesions, difficult areas such as the eyelids, lips and skin folds, local anaesthetic and histology. Every item appears in the clinic’s estimate (Kostenvoranschlag) before the procedure. Laser papilloma removal prices are covered separately.
Frequently asked questions
Does a removed papilloma have to go to the lab?
Not always: if the lesion looks clearly benign under the dermoscope, histology can be skipped. With any doubt the doctor excises it whole and sends it to the laboratory, which is why suspicious lesions are not lasered. The test is billed separately, at an indicative €100 to €200, and its result shows whether further treatment is needed.
Can a wart or skin tag come back after removal?
A removed skin tag usually does not grow back in the same spot, but new ones can appear elsewhere. Warts are different: the virus can stay in the skin, and new warts sometimes appear even after successful treatment. New growths are best shown to a dermatologist rather than removed at home.
How much does wart removal cost in Germany?
As a guide, €30 to €70 for each additional wart removed at the same visit, plus €150 to €300 for the first consultation with dermoscopy. Plantar warts may need several freezing sessions, so the bill can cover several visits. The clinic gives the exact amount in its estimate after the examination.
How AlenMed Arranges Wart and Papilloma Removal
AlenMed starts with photos: the patient sends daylight close-ups of the lesions and tells us how many there are, where, since when and whether they have changed. We then choose a dermatology department, for example at Charité in Berlin, University Hospital Cologne (dermatology headed by Prof. Esther von Stebut) or University Hospital Frankfurt (dermatology headed by Prof. Bastian Schilling). This is how arranging treatment in Germany generally works.
If the doctor sees no reason to wait, examination and removal often happen in one visit. The estimate comes before the procedure, payment goes directly to the clinic, and AlenMed’s services are paid separately. AlenMed’s office is in Munich; the clinics are across Germany.
This material is for reference only and is not an offer. Prices are indicative; the final amount is set in the clinic’s estimate after the examination, and the doctor chooses the removal method at a face-to-face appointment.
