LASIK and Eye Surgery in Germany: Costs and Types of Procedures

Updated

Ophthalmic surgery in a German eye clinic using femtosecond laser

Eye surgery in Germany is most often planned for cataract, glaucoma or retinal disease, or by people who want to stop wearing glasses; the clinic names the price in a written estimate once it has reviewed the examination results.

The total depends on the procedure, the lens or laser and whether a hospital stay is needed. Below we explain the lines of an estimate and how operations differ; for the conditions treated, see ophthalmology in Germany.

Eye Surgery Costs in Germany Depend on the Procedure

The price depends first on the type of operation. Laser vision correction (Femto-LASIK, ReLEx SMILE) reshapes the cornea. Cataract surgery breaks up the clouded lens with ultrasound and removes it (phacoemulsification), replacing it with a monofocal, multifocal or toric intraocular lens. Glaucoma treatment lowers eye pressure by laser (selective laser trabeculoplasty) or drainage surgery. Vitreoretinal surgery repairs retinal detachments and macular holes.

Most lens operations and laser procedures are outpatient. Some retinal operations and complex glaucoma surgery need a hospital stay, billed under the DRG system as one sum for the whole case.

Urgency matters too. Laser correction is elective, so you can wait for the estimate. A detached retina needs prompt surgery and there may be no time for an estimate; where to operate is then decided with the ophthalmologist who found the detachment.

What Makes Up the Cost of an Eye Operation

The cost covers examinations, doctors’ fees, materials and, if needed, a hospital stay. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) images the retina and optic nerve and can reveal conditions that change the plan. Corneal topography maps the cornea; laser correction is not planned without it. Biometry measures the eye to calculate lens power; tonometry checks eye pressure, key in glaucoma.

Surgeons and anaesthetists charge under the GOÄ, the German medical fee schedule. Each service has a number and base rate, multiplied by a factor for difficulty, time and circumstances: 1 to 3.5, and above 2.3 only when special features of the case justify it.

Materials come third. For cataract this is the intraocular lens: monofocal costs less than multifocal or toric. In retinal surgery, gas or silicone oil holds the retina in place; the oil is later removed in a separate operation. Single-use kits and laser use are also charged.

LASIK Eye Surgery in Germany and the Other Operations: How the Estimates Differ

Each operation has its own main cost driver; for cataract, the lens. A monofocal lens gives sharp vision at one distance, usually far, so glasses are still needed for reading; multifocal lenses have several focal points, and toric lenses also correct astigmatism. Not everyone suits a multifocal lens; the surgeon decides after the examination. More under cataract treatment.

For glaucoma, the procedure decides. Selective laser trabeculoplasty is a short outpatient treatment that improves outflow through the eye’s drainage system; drainage surgery is more complex, creating a new outflow path or fitting an implant. Glaucoma is chronic, so pressure is checked for life after any operation; see glaucoma treatment.

Retinal detachment and macular holes are treated by vitrectomy: the gel-like vitreous is removed and gas or oil presses the retina into place; some patients then stay in hospital.

LASIK eye surgery in Germany is offered in its modern form, Femto-LASIK: one laser cuts a thin corneal flap, another reshapes the tissue beneath. ReLEx SMILE works without a flap, removing a small disc of tissue through a tiny incision. Not everyone is suitable: following the recommendations of the German Commission for Refractive Surgery (KRC), surgeons check corneal thickness and shape first, and too thin a cornea or signs of keratoconus (thinning and bulging) rule the laser out. The price of laser eye surgery in Germany depends on method and equipment and has its own page.

What the Estimate Includes and What It Leaves Out

An estimate usually covers examinations, the operation, general or local anaesthesia, the lens or materials, the next-day check and initial eye drops. When comparing estimates, check that both include the lens and follow-up check: without them an estimate looks cheaper, but the bill may be higher.

Budget separately for days in Germany until the follow-up check, a companion’s accommodation and the flight. With gas in the eye after retinal surgery you cannot fly until it has gone; the surgeon names the period and the ophthalmologist clears you. Home check-ups are extra.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a price before travelling to Germany?

Yes, before you buy tickets: the clinic prepares a preliminary estimate (Kostenvoranschlag) from your ophthalmologist’s reports and OCT and topography results. If the examination in Germany shows that another method or lens is needed, the sum changes; the final invoice reflects the services provided.

Do I need to stay in hospital for eye surgery?

Usually not: laser vision correction and most lens operations are outpatient, and you return to your hotel the same day. Some retinal operations and complex glaucoma surgery require a hospital stay. Even after outpatient surgery, stay near the clinic until the next-day check.

How long should I stay in Germany after eye surgery?

It depends on the operation; the surgeon will tell you. The minimum is the check the day after surgery. Patients with gas in the eye after retinal surgery stay longest: they cannot fly until it has gone and the ophthalmologist allows it. Book a flexible return ticket.

How AlenMed Organises Eye Surgery in Germany

For eye surgery in Germany, send us your ophthalmologist’s reports with OCT and topography results; we translate them and pass them to a suitable specialist clinic. At the Augenklinik Herzog Carl Theodor in Munich, for example, head physician Prof. Christos Haritoglou focuses on the retina, Prof. Thomas Klink on glaucoma surgery and PD Dr. Linda M. Meyer on cataract. Heidelberg University Eye Hospital is directed by Prof. Gerd U. Auffarth, Tübingen University Eye Hospital by Prof. Karl Bartz-Schmidt and the Centre of Ophthalmology at University Hospital Cologne by Prof. Claus Cursiefen.

The clinic sends its estimate before you travel. You pay the clinic directly, AlenMed’s services are a separate item, and a medical interpreter attends your appointments; more under arranging treatment in Germany.

This material is for reference only and is not an offer. The surgical method and lens are chosen by the doctor at a face-to-face consultation.
