What a Tummy Tuck Costs in Germany

Updated

There is no single tummy tuck cost in Germany, so the ranges found online are too wide to explain anything. A German hospital quotes after an examination, not from a price list. «Abdominoplasty» covers several operations of very different size.

This page breaks the estimate into parts: which surgical decisions move the figure, what is billed on top, when a statutory fund pays. Your own figure comes only in a written quote. For the operation itself, see tummy tuck in Germany.

Tummy tuck cost in Germany: what the estimate is made of

The estimate has eight items. A first consultation with examination and photos sets the extent of surgery; a workup — blood tests, clotting, ECG, if needed an internist’s clearance — shows whether anaesthesia is safe. The surgeon’s fee covers only the operation; anaesthetist, theatre time and ward nights are billed separately; a compression garment supports the tissue; dressings and follow-ups monitor healing. Doctors bill item by item under the official fee schedule, the GOÄ, not «per operation». Each act has a points value; a point is worth 5.82873 cents, and the base rate is multiplied — usually by up to 2.3, by up to 3.5 with written reasons, higher only by prior written agreement. Item 2452, «Exstirpation einer Fettschürze – einschließlich plastischer Deckung des Grundes –» (removal of an abdominal apron), has 1,400 points: €187.69 at 2.3, €285.61 at 3.5, and as a rule 25% less for inpatients. The items and multiplier follow the extent of surgery, hence the spread between hospitals.

Garments and dressing materials may be billed on top. Some hospitals quote a package, others itemise: ask which you have, and what happens if surgery runs long.

What moves the figure up or down

The extent of surgery matters most. A mini abdominoplasty removes a little skin below the navel, often leaving the navel in place; a full tummy tuck repositions it; a circumferential body lift after major weight loss removes skin all round the trunk. These differ in length and difficulty, and the cost of a tummy tuck in Germany differs with them. Breast surgery added? See mommy makeover cost.

Add-ons also count: repairing separated abdominal muscles (diastasis) in the same operation, closing an umbilical hernia, flank liposuction (liposuction cost in Germany), plus anaesthetic time and ward nights. Smoking, excess weight and diabetes do not raise the rate but lengthen preparation: smokers should stop three to four weeks ahead, a tummy tuck is no way to lose weight, and all three are linked to more complications, so surgery is sometimes postponed.

Examples, not a ranking: at the Villa Bella plastic surgery clinic in Munich, Dr Sebastian Pretzsch and Dr Maximilian Chlosta perform abdominoplasty and body contouring; in Stuttgart, Professor Frank Werdin is one of the chief physicians of plastic and aesthetic surgery at the Diakonie-Klinikum, and Dr Ulrich E. Ziegler the same department at the Robert-Bosch-Krankenhaus.

What the quote does not include

The quote leaves out the trip: flights, a companion’s lodging, transfers, a medical interpreter, a visa extension if recovery runs long, a second flight for the follow-up — none of them medical services. Plan two or three weeks, not one: drains come out after a few days, stitches after 10 to 21 days, and the surgeon decides when you fly.

Costs can also arise along the way: an extra ward night, extra drains and dressings, treatment of a complication. By law, the doctor must state expected costs in writing beforehand if insurance will not pay, and explain risks in good time. So ask what a revision would cost before you sign, not after.

Does health insurance pay

A cosmetic tummy tuck is a private service, paid by the patient. Excess skin after major weight loss that causes persistent rashes and inflammation and restricts movement is different: that is a medical indication, and a statutory fund may then pay for necessary treatment under certain conditions, deciding on records and photographs, not preference.

A foreign patient without German cover pays either way, but the wording of the indication still shapes the extent of surgery and the estimate, and treatment for a medical indication is VAT-exempt. So bring a dermatologist’s or surgeon’s report on the skin fold.

How to get a written estimate

To calculate, a hospital needs three-view photographs of the abdomen as it instructs, height and weight, weight before the loss, previous abdominal operations and caesarean sections, medication, and records of other conditions. Without them, expect only a ballpark figure.

In the reply, check the validity date, whether anaesthesia and ward time are included, how many follow-ups are covered and what happens to the deposit on cancellation. Compare package contents, not bottom lines. Choosing a country too? See tummy tuck abroad: where to have it done.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a tummy tuck in Germany?

There is no single price; the final sum is in the hospital’s written estimate. The doctor’s bill can be checked: GOÄ item 2452 at a multiplier of 2.3 is €187.69. Other surgical items, anaesthesia, the hospital, the garment and VAT come on top.

Is VAT charged on a tummy tuck?

Yes, if there is no medical indication. Medical services are VAT-exempt only as treatment (§ 4 No. 14 UStG), so 19% is added for a cosmetic tummy tuck. If the fold is removed for persistent inflammation and the hospital documents this, no VAT is due.

Can I get a quote without a visit?

A preliminary one, yes: from photographs, height, weight, weight-loss history and past operations, a hospital can draw up a written estimate, and the surgeon confirms the extent in person. If a muscle or hernia repair proves necessary, the estimate is recalculated before you sign.

How AlenMed organises treatment

After the first contact, a medical interpreter translates records and photographs for two or three plastic surgery departments; the reply is a written estimate with proposed dates, and medical visa paperwork is prepared alongside.

AlenMed has 86 partner hospitals in 38 cities, 345 doctors and an office in Munich. A coordinator books appointments, interprets at consultations, helps with lodging during recovery and makes sure the follow-up happens before you fly home.

This material is for information only and is not an offer. A doctor decides on treatment at a face-to-face examination.
