Brain tumour treatment cost in Germany

Updated

The honest answer on brain tumour treatment cost in Germany is that no single figure exists: «brain tumour» covers several dozen diagnoses, and two people with similar scans may be treated in fundamentally different ways. People usually ask at the start of the road, wanting an order of magnitude to decide whether to travel.

So this page has no price list: it shows the blocks of a bill, the order they come in and the questions that stop the estimate doubling once you are in Germany. On the treatment itself, see brain tumour treatment in Germany.

Why no figure can be named before the diagnostics

Until histology and molecular analysis are done, the decisive facts are unknown: benign or malignant, primary tumour or metastasis from another organ, which genetic profile. Histology examines tumour tissue under a microscope; molecular analysis looks for characteristic changes in its genes. This decides whether surgery is the whole treatment or the start of months of therapy.

So a German hospital quotes in stages: first the diagnostics, then, after the tumour board, the treatment. An estimate «for the whole treatment» issued before the histology is not precision but a promise nobody can keep.

The first stage covers MRI with contrast to the hospital’s protocol, sometimes PET, which shows tumour activity, a review of the slides by the hospital’s pathologist, consultations with a neurosurgeon and a neuro-oncologist, and the tumour board itself, where specialists decide jointly. How German bills work in general is covered under treatment prices in Germany.

The blocks a bill is made of

A bill is made of several blocks, starting with the diagnostics and the review of the material. Then the operation: theatre time, neuronavigation, which shows the surgeon the instrument’s position on the scans, intraoperative monitoring of nerve pathways and sometimes awake surgery, so speech can be checked during removal. Intensive care and inpatient days are separate lines.

Radiotherapy may be a conventional course over several weeks, stereotactic radiosurgery, precisely targeted irradiation in one or a few sessions, or irradiation with protons (see proton therapy in Germany). These differ in cost and duration, and the choice decides how many weeks the patient must live in Germany.

Drug treatment means chemotherapy and targeted agents chosen on the molecular result, aimed at a specific change in the tumour cells. Here cost depends above all on the drug and the length of the course, not the doctor’s work. On brain surgery in general, see neurosurgery in Germany.

How a German estimate is built

A German estimate has two parts: inpatient care is billed through the DRG system, a flat rate per case weighted by diagnosis and procedures, while doctors’ fees in private treatment follow the official GOÄ schedule with a complexity multiplier, as a rule no higher than 2.3; a doctor charging more must justify it in writing. So a written estimate shows both the «case» and the individual items.

The estimate should state, or you should ask in writing, what happens after a complication, a longer stay in intensive care or an unplanned second operation, who holds the deposit and how the unused part is returned.

What the quoted figure leaves out

The quoted figure leaves out flights, a companion’s accommodation for the whole treatment, the interpreter and transport between hospital and accommodation. With radiotherapy, accommodation is needed for weeks, often the most underestimated line of all.

Later come follow-up MRI scans on a schedule, rehabilitation after surgery, which with brain tumours can take weeks, and continued drug treatment at home. The surgical stage is taken apart separately in brain tumour surgery cost in Germany.

How to compare quotes and where to start

Compare the content, not the totals: the same radiotherapy method, the histology review included or not, the department and the doctor named, intensive care included, and what happens if the tumour board changes the plan.

A sensible order: first a remote second opinion on the existing scans and slides, then the decision to travel. That is cheaper and faster than flying in to learn the treatment could have been given at home. See second opinion from a German doctor.

Frequently asked questions

How much does brain tumour treatment cost in Germany?

There is no exact figure before the diagnostics: the cost depends on the type of tumour and its treatment. The hospital first estimates the diagnostics and the tumour board, then, after the board, the surgery, radiotherapy or drugs. One operation may suffice, or months of therapy may follow, and the bill then has several stages.

Can I get an estimate before travelling to Germany?

Yes, for the first stage: the diagnostics and the tumour board. The MRI in its original format, discharge letters and slides go to a neuro-oncologist, who says what is missing; then the hospital names its figures. The treatment estimate follows the tumour board, once the diagnosis is known. A remote second opinion sometimes shows treatment is possible at home.

Why can the final bill be higher than the estimate?

The bill grows with what the estimate did not foresee: a complication, longer intensive care, an unplanned second operation. The estimate also excludes flights, the companion’s accommodation, the interpreter and transport, and later follow-up MRI scans, rehabilitation and drugs at home. Ask in writing before the trip how such cases are billed, who holds the deposit and how the rest is returned.

How AlenMed arranges brain tumour treatment in Germany

AlenMed starts with the documents: the MRI in its original format, discharge letters and blocks or slides of tumour tissue go to a neuro-oncologist, who says what is missing for a decision; only then does the first-stage estimate appear. Then come the visa invitation letter, an urgent appointment if the tumour grows fast, and an interpreter at the tumour board and at discharge.

Plan ahead how long the histology review takes, how many weeks a course of radiotherapy lasts, where the companion will stay, how treatment continues at home and who answers questions after the patient returns.
