Laser eye surgery cost in Berlin

Updated

Anyone comparing laser eye surgery cost in Berlin finds the figures will not compare: prices are usually per eye and hinge on the method. One Berlin provider advertises a weekend-trip price, another three times as much, and neither says whether that means one eye or two, or includes the screening, drops and follow-up visits.

Below: what the bill is built from, why the method decided at the screening matters more than the city, what German rules for private medical fees mean for a foreign patient, and what is settled before anyone names a number. For the whole country, see the price of laser vision correction in Germany; here, only Berlin.

What the figure in a Berlin advert covers — and what it leaves out

The most common misunderstanding: vision correction is priced per eye almost everywhere, so for most patients the advertised number doubles before anything is added.

A complete quote normally covers the preliminary examination with corneal measurements, the operation with the chosen laser’s consumables, drops for the first days and a set number of follow-up visits. If any of these sit outside the headline figure, the total changes: ask in writing.

A headline figure is a starting price for a simple eye: moderate short-sightedness, no astigmatism worth mentioning, a cornea thick enough for the simplest method. Anything else means another method and price, decided by the screening, not the advert.

The method sets the price, not the city

The eye, not the city, decides the method, which moves the figure most. Surface treatments such as PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) or LASEK (laser-assisted subepithelial keratectomy) work on the cornea’s outer layer and have a longer, less comfortable recovery. LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) raises a thin flap and is quicker to recover from. Femtosecond LASIK cuts that flap with a laser, not a blade. Lenticule extraction removes a thin disc of tissue through a small opening.

Sometimes the laser is not the answer. With a high prescription, a thin or irregular cornea, keratoconus (a thinning, cone-shaped cornea) or an eye no longer young, the talk moves to an implanted lens, in front of the natural lens or replacing it: another operation at another price. Some people are told no for this reason, and a careful surgeon’s no is a good outcome. See ophthalmology in Germany.

Astigmatism correction, a second eye on a separate day, the wavefront or topography-guided planning some eyes need and a written retreatment policy for the small share of eyes that partly drift back also move the figure. Each method’s limits, contraindications and repeat operations are set out by the refractive surgery commission of the German ophthalmological societies.

Why insurance does not pay, and what German price rules mean

Statutory insurance does not pay because in Germany laser surgery on a healthy eye counts as an elective private service: the patient pays. Hence quotes come as private estimates, not a tariff, best had in writing before the trip.

Private medical fees follow the official schedule of fees for doctors, the GOÄ (Gebührenordnung für Ärzte). It lists items and permits a multiplier within the limits of § 5, so two honest quotes for one operation can differ, and an itemised estimate is more useful than a single number.

The screening: what has to be settled before any figure

The screening settles whether a laser suits the eye, and which method. It measures the prescription and its stability over the past year or more, corneal thickness and map, pupil size in the dark, tear film and dryness, the retina and eye pressure. Some of this can be done at home, saving a day in Berlin. For costs, see ophthalmology prices in Germany.

Stability matters because an eye still changing will change again after the laser: a recent new prescription is a reason to wait, not to book. Dry eyes, pregnancy and breastfeeding, some autoimmune conditions and certain medications are also reasons to postpone.

At the screening, ask which method is proposed and why, what happens if the result falls short, who does the follow-up at home and what the written report will contain. See ophthalmologists in Germany.

Having it done in Berlin: what that practically means

Berlin is convenient rather than cheap: direct flights, many clinics and practices, English-speaking reception in many, yet prices not systematically lower than elsewhere in Germany. Choosing the city before the surgeon is the wrong order. See hospitals in Berlin and private hospitals in Berlin.

Screening on one day, the operation on another, with a check the next morning and usually one more before flying. The flight home is normally a few days later, not the same evening, and someone should escort the patient from the clinic. In AlenMed’s partner network in Berlin, ophthalmology is headed by Prof. Sabine Aisenbrey at the Klinik für Augenheilkunde of Vivantes Klinikum Neukölln; an eye examination can start there.

Frequently asked questions

Why do Berlin prices differ so much?

Because similar figures stand for different services. One clinic quotes per eye, another for both; one includes screening, drops and follow-up, another does not; one is priced for the simplest method, another for a harder one. Compare itemised written estimates after screening.

Can I get a price before travelling?

A provisional one, yes; the final figure follows the screening. From prescriptions and corneal measurements sent ahead, a clinic can propose a method and send a written estimate before the flight. If the screening finds otherwise, the method and the price change.

How many days in Berlin?

Usually several. Screening and operation fall on different days, with a check the next morning and usually another before the flight, so the flight home is not on the evening of the operation. Recovery after surface treatments takes longer than after LASIK.

How AlenMed arranges it

AlenMed starts before the flight: existing prescriptions and corneal measurements are translated and sent ahead, so talk of method and price begins at home. Then come the appointment, a written estimate, the visa invitation, the transfer, an interpreter at the consultation and a translated written report. The company works with 86 partner clinics in 38 German cities and has its office in Munich.

Plan how many days to set aside, what to do if the screening says no, how follow-up passes to a doctor at home and who answers questions afterwards.

For information only, not an offer: whether laser correction is possible, and by which method, is decided by a doctor in person.
