People looking into thymoma treatment in Germany want the method and one figure, but no honest figure exists before the stage and plan are known. A thymoma is a tumour of the thymus, a small gland behind the breastbone above the heart. It is rare and is often found by chance on a chest CT or during tests for myasthenia gravis. “Thymus therapy” with thymus extracts is a different subject with no link to the tumour.
This page explains what makes up a hospital estimate and how to get one before you travel. There is no single figure for thymoma: the hospital names the price after reviewing the records. General billing rules are covered under cancer treatment cost in Germany.
What Shapes the Treatment Plan
Two things shape the plan: spread and type. Doctors check whether the thymoma is still inside its capsule or has grown into the surrounding fat, the pleura (lining of the lungs), the pericardium (sac around the heart) or vessels. The WHO classification, based on the cells under the microscope, divides thymomas into types A, AB and B1–B3. Thymic carcinoma is separate: a more aggressive form, treated differently.
The key question for the thoracic surgeon is whether the tumour can be removed completely; CT and MRI answer it and decide whether treatment starts with surgery. The US National Cancer Institute’s PDQ summary “Thymoma and Thymic Carcinoma Treatment” sets out stages and treatment options.
Myasthenia gravis makes muscles tire quickly: the eyelids droop, vision doubles, swallowing becomes difficult. It accompanies thymoma in some patients; a neurologist prepares them for surgery, which changes the timing and adds lines to the estimate. See myasthenia gravis treatment.
Tests Before Treatment: Items in the Estimate
The estimate starts with the tests, usually these items:
- a thoracic surgeon consultation;
- a chest CT with contrast;
- MRI or PET-CT where needed;
- blood tests;
- with signs of myasthenia, testing for acetylcholine receptor antibodies (found in the blood in myasthenia gravis) and a neurologist;
- biopsy — not always: a tumour that looks removable is often operated on without one;
- a case review at the multidisciplinary tumour board (Tumorkonferenz), a joint meeting of specialists.
Recent good-quality CT and MRI on disc in DICOM format sometimes spare repeat scans. The hospital decides, so send them in advance.
Surgery, Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy: How Costs Are Calculated
Each part is priced differently: surgery as a hospital case, radiotherapy per course, chemotherapy by regimen. The core of treatment is removing the tumour together with the thymus (thymectomy), through the breastbone or by keyhole surgery, including robotic. The hospital stay is billed under the DRG system as one amount per case: theatre, team, anaesthesia, ward and a night in intensive care if needed. Nursing care is charged separately, per day on the ward, and very expensive drugs may be billed separately. By law the hospital’s prices are the same for all patients, with no surcharge for foreigners. Doctors’ services chosen beyond the general hospital services, such as treatment by the head of department, are billed separately under the GOÄ fee schedule.
Radiotherapy after surgery is not for everyone: it depends on spread and on whether the tumour was removed completely. The course is priced as a whole series of sessions, usually as an outpatient; see radiotherapy prices.
Chemotherapy is for advanced or unresectable tumours, sometimes before surgery to shrink the tumour; the cost depends on the regimen and number of cycles. If the disease returns, drug treatment is discussed, including targeted drugs; see targeted therapy for rare tumours.
| Item | What it depends on | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Tests and tumour board | existing scans, need for a biopsy and a neurologist | hospital’s estimate |
| Surgery and hospital stay under DRG | approach, extent, days on the ward and in intensive care | hospital’s estimate |
| Radiotherapy | whether it is needed, number of sessions | hospital’s estimate |
| Chemotherapy and other drugs | regimen and number of cycles | hospital’s estimate |
Where Thymoma Surgery Is Performed in Germany
Thymoma is operated on in thoracic surgery departments, for example in Frankfurt and Stuttgart. The Department of Thoracic Surgery at Agaplesion Frankfurter Diakonie Kliniken in Frankfurt is headed by Stephan Trainer; it performs surgery for benign and malignant chest diseases in adults and children, including minimally invasive thoracic surgery, and the hospital has a lung cancer centre certified by the German Cancer Society. At Klinikum Stuttgart, thoracic surgeon Dr Rainer Sätzler treats diseases of the chest organs surgically.
Choose not by city but by whether there is a thoracic surgery department, a tumour board and access to radiotherapy in the same hospital or through its partners.
Frequently asked questions
How much does thymoma treatment in Germany cost?
There is no single sum: the price depends on the stage, tumour type and plan, surgery alone or with radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The hospital names the exact price in an estimate (Kostenvoranschlag) after reviewing the records. Usually the patient pays in advance; the final invoice reflects the services actually delivered.
Is a biopsy needed before thymoma surgery?
Not always. If CT and MRI show a tumour that looks completely removable, it is often operated on without a prior biopsy; the hospital’s tumour board decides each case. If a biopsy was done at home, send the pathology report: the tumour type affects both the plan and the estimate.
Can a thymoma be removed without opening the breastbone?
Yes, if the stage allows: keyhole surgery, including robotic, is an option mainly when the tumour has not grown into neighbouring organs. The thoracic surgeon chooses the approach from CT and MRI, and the priority is to remove the whole tumour with the thymus; if small incisions cannot achieve that, the breastbone is opened.
How AlenMed Arranges Thymoma Treatment and the Estimate
AlenMed handles the correspondence with the hospital up to the estimate. The patient sends discharge letters, CT and MRI on disc, the pathology report if there was a biopsy, details of myasthenia and current medicines; we translate them and send them to a thoracic surgery department, and the hospital returns a plan and an estimate (Kostenvoranschlag) in the patient’s name.
Payment goes directly to the hospital against its invoice, usually a prepayment (deposit) before treatment and a final invoice for the services actually delivered. AlenMed’s services are paid separately. If a plan was already proposed at home, a second opinion in Germany can come first. Visa, flights, accommodation and an interpreter are not part of the hospital estimate; the company office in Munich works with hospitals across Germany.
This is reference material, not an offer; treatment is decided by the doctor at a face-to-face consultation.
