University Hospital Halle (Saale), Germany

Updated

University Hospital Halle is the hospital of the medical faculty of Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg in Halle (Saale), in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt; its German name is Universitätsklinikum Halle (Saale).

This page is for patients who have been referred to this hospital or to one of its departments. It covers what is known about the hospital, how to send a request and which AlenMed partner hospitals are nearby, in Leipzig.

What we know about the hospital

It is a university hospital: treatment, the training of doctors and research are combined in one institution, closely linked with the medical faculty of Martin Luther University. For patients, this means that complex cases come here and treatment is often decided jointly by several specialists. The hospital describes itself as a provider of maximum care (Maximalversorger) for complex, severe and rare diseases and injuries in southern Saxony-Anhalt. Cancer treatment plans are proposed by multidisciplinary tumour boards (Tumorboards) involving all relevant specialties; the decision is recorded and revisited as treatment progresses. Our page on university hospitals in Germany explains how such hospitals differ from others.

The hospital has 30 clinics and departments (Kliniken und Departments) and names cardiovascular disease and oncology as its main areas. The Central German Heart Centre (Mitteldeutsches Herzzentrum) combines cardiac surgery and cardiology. Cancer care is brought together in the Krukenberg Cancer Centre (Krukenberg-Krebszentrum Halle, KKH), a joint unit of the hospital and the medical faculty, which includes organ cancer centres such as the breast centre (Brustzentrum), the prostate cancer centre (Prostatakarzinomzentrum) and the paediatric oncology centre (Kinderonkologisches Zentrum). There is also a kidney transplant centre (Nierentransplantationszentrum) and a perinatal centre (Perinatalzentrum), where some procedures can be performed before birth.

Information about the hospital is best checked on the department’s own website, which shows what it treats and who leads it. The second guide is certificates from German medical societies: the Krukenberg Cancer Centre, for example, publishes its certificates online, both for the centre as a whole (Onkologisches Zentrum) and for individual organ centres. What such a certificate means and how to choose a hospital for cancer care is explained by the Krebsinformationsdienst of the German Cancer Research Center (in German). Rankings by intermediaries are no substitute: they do not show who assessed the department or how.

When Halle makes sense

Halle makes sense if a doctor has recommended a specific department or doctor there, or if treatment has already started there, for example an operation with a next stage or follow-up still to come. Continuing at the same hospital is then usually easier: the medical history, scans and earlier results are already on file.

If the specialty matters more than the city, patients choose the department that treats their diagnosis, and the search goes beyond Halle: what counts is the department’s experience with such cases, not the hospital’s name. The university hospitals of Leipzig, described below, are among the nearest alternatives. Any of them accepts a case only after its doctors have reviewed the reports and scans.

Partner hospitals nearby: Leipzig

The AlenMed partner hospitals closest to Halle are in Leipzig, and the first of them is University Hospital Leipzig. It has 1,451 beds, 61 clinics and departments and 10 institutes, and more than 8,000 staff work there, including the Faculty of Medicine. The medical faculty of Leipzig University itself was founded in 1415.

The second is Helios Heart Center Leipzig, a specialist hospital for cardiac surgery, cardiology and paediatric cardiology. It has 440 inpatient and 10 day-care beds. Under a cooperation agreement with the Free State of Saxony and the University of Leipzig, the heart centre holds university hospital status.

Frequently asked questions

What does University Hospital Halle treat?

University Hospital Halle treats many kinds of conditions, and it names cardiovascular disease and oncology as its two main areas. Its 30 clinics and departments also include neurosurgery (Neurochirurgie), urology (Urologie), ophthalmology (Augenheilkunde), orthopaedics and trauma surgery (Department für Orthopädie, Unfall- und Wiederherstellungschirurgie) and paediatrics. Whether a department takes your case is decided by its doctors from the documents.

How do I get treatment at University Hospital Halle?

Planned treatment starts with a request, not a trip. Discharge reports, histology results, scans and a list of medicines are translated into German and sent to the relevant department, whose doctors decide whether to take the case and which tests are needed. If they agree, the hospital sends a cost estimate and usually issues the visa invitation after the deposit. Travelling before the department replies is not advisable.

How much does treatment at University Hospital Halle cost?

There is no single price: the hospital states the amount in a cost estimate (Kostenvoranschlag) once its doctors have reviewed the documents. The total depends on the diagnosis, the tests and operations needed, the length of stay and extras such as a private room. The deposit goes directly to the hospital’s account; flights and accommodation are planned separately. Without documents and an examination, any figure would be unverified.

Is University Hospital Halle one of AlenMed’s partners?

No, University Hospital Halle is not one of AlenMed’s partner hospitals, so we cannot promise that it will accept a patient. A request can still be sent: we translate the documents and write to the relevant department, whose doctors decide. Where the case is suitable, we also write to our partner hospitals in Leipzig at the same time, so the patient has a choice.

How AlenMed arranges treatment in Halle and Leipzig

AlenMed translates the medical documents into German (discharge reports, histology results, scans on disc with their reports, the list of medicines) and sends the request to the relevant department in Halle and, where the case is suitable, to a partner hospital in Leipzig at the same time. If it is too early to travel, the same documents can be used for a second opinion in Germany: a German doctor assesses the diagnosis and treatment plan without a trip.

Once a hospital agrees to accept the patient, it sends a cost estimate, the deposit is paid directly into its account, and the hospital then issues the visa invitation. We arrange an interpreter for consultations and help with accommodation. AlenMed’s office is in Munich, and its partner hospitals are across Germany; the page on arranging treatment in Germany describes every step.

This material is for reference only and is not an offer. The treatment plan is decided by the doctor at an in-person consultation.
