Medical Park St. Hubertus in Bad Wiessee is a rehabilitation clinic on the shore of Lake Tegernsee in Bavaria, full name Medical Park Bad Wiessee St. Hubertus. It has two areas: orthopaedics, traumatology and sports medicine, and cardiology with internal medicine.
Surgery itself takes place in another hospital; patients come here for the next stage, rehabilitation straight after the hospital stay. In Germany this is called Anschlussheilbehandlung (AHB): follow-on treatment that starts directly after discharge, not months later. Below: the programmes, doctors, timing, the stay and AlenMed’s role. How rehabilitation in Germany works in general has its own page.
Cardiac Rehabilitation after Heart Attack, Bypass and Valve Surgery
The cardiology department takes patients after a heart attack, after balloon widening and stenting of a coronary artery, after heart and vascular surgery, including coronary bypass and valve replacement or repair, and after pacemaker implantation. The operation itself is described on the coronary bypass surgery page.
The core is exercise: physiotherapy and endurance, strength and coordination training, with the load based on test results, raised gradually and monitored by heart rate and blood pressure. Doctors review the medicines prescribed after surgery and adjust drugs or doses if needed. Risk factors get separate attention: blood pressure, cholesterol, smoking, weight. The World Health Organization counts unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and tobacco use among the most important behavioural risk factors for heart disease. Talks, nutrition advice and psychological counselling prepare patients for life after surgery. More on cardiac rehabilitation is on a separate page.
The department of cardiology and internal medicine is led by chief physician PD Dr. Andreas Stein; PD (Privatdozent) is a German title for a doctor qualified to teach at a university. A former leading senior physician, he specialises in diagnosing coronary artery disease and treating the coronary arteries and heart valves by catheter.
Orthopaedic Rehabilitation after Joint Replacement and Injuries
The orthopaedic department admits patients after joint and spine surgery, above all knee or hip replacement, and after injuries, including sports injuries. The operation is covered on the knee replacement page. The programme combines physiotherapy, exercise training, walking practice, strength and balance work, massage and pain relief. Patients learn to use the new joint: getting out of a chair, into bed and up stairs, walking first with crutches, then, if possible, without. A key goal is a steady gait with less risk of falling.
Orthopaedics is headed by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Andrea Meurer, managing director, medical director and chief physician of orthopaedics. Dr. Nadine Dreyer is chief physician of orthopaedics, traumatology and sports medicine, specialising in sports medicine, physical therapy, balneology (treatment with mineral water and mud) and osteopathy. The clinic is a health partner of the Olympic training centre of Bavaria (Olympiastützpunkt Bayern). More on orthopaedic rehabilitation is on a separate page.
When to Come and Which Documents Are Needed
Patients come straight after discharge from the hospital where they had surgery, once the surgeon and the clinic’s doctors agree they are ready: stable, able to eat, wash and move around the ward unaided and fit for daily sessions. For a patient from abroad this means planning rehabilitation before the operation, so the start date, programme, cost and visa are settled by discharge.
The clinic needs the discharge letter (Arztbrief), the operation report, a list of medicines with doses and the latest test results: blood tests, an ECG and echocardiogram after heart surgery, X-rays after joint replacement. Everything is translated into German in advance. Patients should also bring enough medicine for the whole stay and current medical reports.
Staying on Lake Tegernsee: Rooms, Meals and Free Time
Patients live in the clinic: rooms have a television, telephone and safe, and Wi-Fi covers rooms and public areas. The clinic’s restaurants serve light meals for food intolerances, special diets for allergies, coeliac disease and lactose intolerance, and a vegetarian option at lunch and dinner. Between sessions there is Café Alpine with a fireplace room and a terrace overlooking the lake, a pool, a library, a hairdresser and a shop. A relative can stay in the patient’s room or nearby.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need an operation to be admitted to St. Hubertus?
No, patients also come with chronic conditions. In orthopaedics these include osteoarthritis and inflammatory joint and spine diseases, osteoporosis and the effects of injuries and sports strain. In cardiology they include high blood pressure, heart rhythm disorders, heart failure, poor circulation in the limbs and recovery after inflammation of the heart muscle or the heart’s inner lining (myocarditis, endocarditis). A clinic doctor decides from the records whether a programme fits.
How long does rehabilitation at St. Hubertus last?
The clinic’s doctor sets the length from the medical records. After joint replacement, rehabilitation at Medical Park clinics usually takes three to four weeks; for a programme after heart surgery the clinic gives the length once it has reviewed the documents. The duration shapes the cost estimate, the visa and the companions’ accommodation, so it is agreed before the trip.
Can a relative come along?
Yes, a relative can stay with the patient. The clinic can accommodate them in the patient’s room if this is arranged early with its central reservations team. If a companion prefers to stay separately, AlenMed finds accommodation in Bad Wiessee or nearby and helps with their visa invitation.
Do I need to speak German?
No. The records are translated in advance, and an interpreter arranged by AlenMed joins appointments with the doctor, programme discussions and the talk before discharge. In the gym, the pool or walking practice, therapists demonstrate the exercises, so much is clear without words. Complex matters, such as the medication plan after discharge, are best discussed with the interpreter present.
How AlenMed Arranges Rehabilitation at Medical Park St. Hubertus
AlenMed sends St. Hubertus the discharge letter and operation report from the operating hospital and agrees the start date with the clinic. The clinic issues the invoice, and the patient pays it directly. Guide figures are on the page about rehabilitation costs.
We help with the visa invitation and arrange transfer from the hospital or airport, an interpreter and accommodation for companions. The company office is in Munich, and AlenMed’s 86 partner clinics are spread across 38 German cities, so surgery at one of them and rehabilitation on Lake Tegernsee can be planned as one journey.
This material is for reference only and is not an offer. The rehabilitation programme and its length are decided by the clinic’s doctor at an in-person consultation.
