Münchner Onkologie is not a hospital but a specialist medical practice with a day unit in the very centre of Munich, between the cathedral and Marienplatz. It is led by the oncologist Dr med Daniela Grenacher-Horn. A practice with a day unit means that many kinds of drug treatment can be given on an outpatient basis, without a hospital stay.
What kind of place it is
The practice specialises in medical oncology (drug treatment of tumours) and haematology — diseases of the blood — as well as haemostaseology (clotting disorders), transfusion medicine and palliative care. The day unit gives the common chemotherapy regimens on an outpatient basis. The practice works with international patients and offers care in several languages.
Diagnosis and treatment
Diagnosis draws on current imaging and laboratory work — PET/CT, MRI, immunological and molecular genetic tests, bone marrow examination. Some of these are carried out at partner facilities, with the treating oncologist bringing the results together.
Treatment includes systemic chemotherapy, antibody therapy, targeted therapy aimed at the features of the particular tumour, anti-hormonal therapy and supportive transfusion of blood components. The practice also takes on the role of a second opinion — reviewing a diagnosis already made and the plan already proposed.
Particulars
The head of the practice is certified by the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO). The small size of the practice means continuity: as a rule, the same doctor stays with the patient throughout the course.
