The German Heart Centre in Munich (Deutsches Herzzentrum München) is a specialist hospital devoted entirely to diseases of the heart and blood vessels. It opened in the early 1970s and was one of the first centres of its kind in Germany to bring cardiology, cardiac surgery and paediatric cardiology together under one roof. Since 1 August 2024 it has been part of TUM Klinikum alongside the Rechts der Isar university hospital, keeping its name and its specialisation.
What it specialises in
The centre treats the heart at every age — from newborns with congenital defects to elderly patients. The work is built around three large fields: cardiac surgery, cardiology as a medical speciality, and paediatric cardiology with the treatment of congenital heart defects.
The full range of procedures is carried out here: bypass surgery, valve operations, correction of congenital defects, treatment of aortic disease and of rhythm disorders. Heart transplantation and circulatory support for critically ill patients are a separate field.
What sets it apart
Part of the emphasis is on gentle, minimally invasive methods. Some valve operations are performed without opening the chest — through a catheter or a small access (techniques such as MitraClip and similar). For the patient that means less injury and, as a rule, a faster recovery. There is a round-the-clock emergency service for acute heart attack with an angiography laboratory.
As a university centre, the hospital is tied to the medical faculty of the Technical University of Munich, so diagnosis and treatment follow current protocols rather than the preferences of an individual doctor.
How we work with this hospital
An AlenMed coordinator stays with the patient from the first enquiry: helping to collect and translate documents — discharge letters, ECGs, echocardiography and coronary angiography results, images — passing them to the hospital and agreeing the preliminary assessment and cost estimate directly with it. An interpreter is present at appointments. Payment goes directly to the hospital.
