The Urology Clinic Munich-Planegg (Urologische Klinik München-Planegg) is a specialist hospital devoted entirely to urology. This is a case where a narrow profile works in the patient’s favour: it deals only with diseases of the urinary and genital tract and has built up considerable experience in them, above all in prostate surgery.

The clinic treats both benign and malignant disease. Its uro-oncology service — prostate cancer above all — is certified by the German Cancer Society (Deutsche Krebsgesellschaft) as a specialist centre. Certification means the clinic is regularly audited from outside on the number of operations it performs, the quality of its work and the way care is organised.
Main areas
Tumours of the prostate, bladder, kidney, testicle and penis are diagnosed and treated here, as are benign prostate enlargement, kidney stones, infections, urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction. Reconstructive urology and paediatric urology are separate services. In prostate cancer, nerve-sparing operations that preserve the nerve bundles responsible for potency are used where the picture of the disease allows it.
Equipment and particulars
The clinic puts its emphasis on minimally invasive surgery. Its main instrument is the da Vinci robotic system: the surgeon controls fine manipulators through small ports, which reduces tissue injury and speeds up recovery. By the clinic’s own figures more than 600 such procedures are carried out a year, and a second da Vinci robot has been brought into service, widening what it can do. Laser techniques and laparoscopy are also used.
