Prof. Kathleen Wermke — pre-speech development

Prof. Kathleen Wermke

Where the doctor practises and what they do

Prof. Dr rer. nat. Kathleen Wermke heads the Centre for Pre-speech Development and Developmental Disorders at Wurzburg University Hospital. Her primary clinical and scientific activity centers on research into early childhood speech development and specialized pre-speech diagnostics. In her work, she evaluates the pre-verbal vocalisation patterns of newborns and infants to identify potential developmental issues at the earliest possible stage.

Her clinical field also encompasses behavioural physiology (the study of biological principles underlying animal and human behaviour) and medical anthropology (the study of biological and cultural factors affecting human health). Within children’s medicine, these diagnostic methods allow for precise assessment of early communication signals during infancy.

What they are known for

Prof. Dr rer. nat. Kathleen Wermke possesses formal qualifications as both a biologist and an anthropologist. Her interdisciplinary background in biology and medical anthropology enables a comprehensive scientific approach to studying early vocal manifestations and developmental physiology in young children.
