Helios Hospital Munich West (Helios Klinikum München West) is a general hospital in Pasing, in the west of Munich, known until 2013 as Klinikum München Pasing. It offers surgery, cancer care, heart, vascular, lung and digestive medicine and obstetrics, and its emergency department is open around the clock.

In plain terms, it is a hospital of focused care (Schwerpunktversorgung) with 412 beds, a teaching hospital of Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU) and part of the private Helios group since 2013. It suits patients who need an operation or cancer treatment in a mid-sized hospital rather than on a university campus. Our overview of hospitals in Munich compares it with the others.

History: From the Pasing Hospital to Helios Hospital Munich West

The hospital grew out of the asylum and hospital of the district left of the Isar in Pasing, founded in 1884 through a foundation of Pastor Wörnzhofer. Under a new self-government law it was renamed Bezirkskrankenhaus in 1919, and in 1939 it became the Kreiskrankenhaus München-Pasing. On 25 April 1945 an air raid damaged it so badly that it moved into the Pasing secondary school (Oberrealschule). Rebuilt after the war, it reopened in 1967 as a completely new building.

Treatment building II followed in 2001 and allowed overdue modernisation. In 2005 the district of Munich sold the hospital to Rhön-Klinikum AG, which ran it together with Klinikum München Perlach as one company; that year it also became a teaching hospital of LMU. A further sale in 2013 brought both hospitals into the Helios group under new names. The rest of the group appears on our page about Helios hospitals.

Centres and Departments

  • Gynaecological Cancer Centre (Gynäkologisches Krebszentrum)
  • Breast Cancer Centre (Interdisziplinäres Brustkrebszentrum)
  • Bowel Centre (Darmzentrum)
  • Head and Neck Tumour Centre (Kopf-Hals-Tumorzentrum)
  • Aortic Centre South (Aortenzentrum Süd)
  • Centre for Endoscopy and Endometriosis (Zentrum für Endoskopie und Endometriose)
  • Centre for Minimally Invasive Surgery (Zentrum für minimal-invasive Chirurgie)
  • Pelvic Floor Centre (Interdisziplinäres Beckenbodenzentrum)
  • Musculoskeletal Centre Upper Bavaria (Muskuloskelettales Zentrum Oberbayern)
  • Trauma Centre (Traumazentrum)
  • Wound Centre (Wundzentrum)

Several of these centres treat cancer: the gynaecological cancer centre and the bowel centre are certified by the German Cancer Society (Deutsche Krebsgesellschaft). The Department of Haematology, Oncology and Palliative Medicine treats ovarian and oesophageal cancer, leukaemias, lymphomas and myeloma. A weekly tumour board of oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, radiation oncologists and pathologists agrees each patient’s plan; the pathologist’s tissue analysis shows what kind of tumour it is and steers the choice of treatment. Radiotherapy is given by an independent practice on the lower ground floor, the radiotherapy clinic in Munich-Pasing.

The Centre for Endoscopy and Endometriosis operates through small incisions, including for endometriosis, in which tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows outside it. Orthopaedics, trauma, hand and spine surgery and joint replacement form a musculoskeletal centre shared with other Helios hospitals, and the German Society for Trauma Surgery (DGU) certifies the trauma centre as regional. The emergency department has a stroke unit and a chest pain unit, and the hospital also has cardiology, vascular surgery, gynaecology and obstetrics, and pneumology departments.

Chief Physicians

Each department is led by a chief physician (Chefarzt). Prof. Sebastian Kufner heads the Department of Cardiology and Internal Intensive Care Medicine, where Prof. Christopher Reithmann is the leading physician for rhythmology, the treatment of heart rhythm disorders. Prof. (TUMS) Reza Ghotbi has been chief of vascular surgery since 2005 and is also the hospital’s medical director; the specialty is covered on our page about vascular surgery in Germany.

Pneumology has two chief physicians, Dr Radu Braga and Michael Hagemann. Alexander Manolopoulos is chief of trauma surgery and orthopaedics. Dr Erich Bielesch heads general and visceral surgery, that is, operations on the abdominal organs. Prof. Brigitte Mayinger is chief physician for gastroenterology, diabetology and general internal medicine.

Rooms, Meals and Getting There

Standard rooms have two beds, and a single or double comfort room can be booked for a surcharge as an optional service (Wahlleistung). On request a companion can stay and eat at the hospital, also for a separate charge. A cafeteria and a restaurant serve patients and visitors, and the hospital stands at the northern edge of the Pasing city park. Relatives can visit during visiting hours.

The address is Steinerweg 5, 81241 Munich. Pasing station nearby is a rail hub for S-Bahn and regional trains. From the station the hospital can be reached on foot, and bus 160 stops right outside (Maria-Eich-Straße stop). International patients receive the route together with their invitation.

Frequently asked questions

Is Helios Hospital Munich West a university hospital?

No. It is a teaching hospital of LMU Munich, a status it has held since 2005. Medical students train here, but the hospital belongs to the private Helios group, not to the university. LMU University Hospital (LMU Klinikum) is a separate institution. For patients, this is a mid-sized hospital with a chief physician in every department.

How much does treatment at Helios Hospital Munich West cost?

There is no fixed price: the hospital calculates each case. Its doctors review the reports and scans, and the hospital issues a cost estimate (Kostenvoranschlag) for the planned tests or operation. The amount depends on the diagnosis, the extent of treatment and the length of stay. Comfort rooms and a companion’s stay cost extra, and the invoice is paid directly to the hospital.

Can a relative stay at the hospital with the patient?

Yes, on request. The hospital can accommodate a companion and provide meals as an optional service, charged separately from treatment. The obstetrics department has family rooms for new parents. Relatives staying in a hotel can visit during visiting hours. It is best to arrange this in advance, together with the admission.

How AlenMed Arranges Treatment at Helios Hospital Munich West

AlenMed prepares the request: reports and scans are translated into German and sent to the relevant department. The hospital decides whether to accept the case and issues a cost estimate (Kostenvoranschlag), so the costs are known in advance. The steps are explained on our page about arranging treatment in Germany.

Payment goes directly to the hospital against its invoice. Once the estimate is agreed, the hospital issues a visa invitation; an interpreter attends consultations and the patient is met at the airport. AlenMed’s office is in Munich, and its partner hospitals are spread across Germany.

This material is for reference only and is not an offer. The treatment plan is decided by a doctor at a face-to-face consultation.
