The Dr. von Hauner Children’s Hospital (Dr. von Haunersches Kinderspital) is one of the oldest children’s hospitals in Germany, founded in 1846. Today it is part of the LMU University Hospital in Munich and remains a major centre of children’s medicine, where treatment goes hand in hand with university research.
What kind of hospital it is
It is a university children’s hospital that brings paediatrics and paediatric surgery together under one roof, along with a centre for social paediatrics. Children and adolescents are treated here across the whole range of illnesses, from routine to the most complex and rare. As a university centre, it takes on cases that call for narrow specialists and a team approach.
Main areas
Among them are paediatric oncology and haematology, bone marrow and stem cell transplantation, endocrinology, immunology and genetics, nephrology, neurology, rheumatology, allergology, child psychiatry and paediatric radiology. Specialist centres cover cystic fibrosis, asthma and allergy, metabolic disorders, diabetes and haemophilia, and there is a burns service.
Equipment and particulars
As a university hospital, Hauner combines treatment with research — new methods reach the child’s bedside without a long delay. Much attention goes into making treatment easier for the child to bear: play and leisure programmes, and work with the family. It is worth mentioning that a new building — the “New Hauner” — is being built for the hospital on the Großhadern campus; the project started in 2023 and is planned for the coming years, bringing children’s medicine together in one modern block.
