Prof. Dr med. Oliver Muensterer (Prof. Dr. med. Oliver Muensterer) is Director of the Department of Paediatric Surgery and Professor of Paediatric Surgery at Dr. von Hauner Children’s Hospital (LMU) in Munich. Parents come to him when a child has a congenital malformation that needs an operation, and when they are looking for keyhole surgery for their child.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Muensterer has led the Department of Paediatric Surgery and its outpatient clinic at Dr. von Hauner Children’s Hospital since October 2020. His main field is minimally invasive paediatric surgery: operations through a few small incisions using endoscopic instruments, after which a child recovers faster and is left with smaller scars. He operates on congenital malformations in premature and newborn babies, including malformations of the oesophagus (for example atresia, where the oesophagus is not connected to the stomach) and of the lungs.
He also treats anorectal malformations (abnormalities of the rectum and anus) and performs surgery for chronic inflammatory bowel disease, that is, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. His work further includes chest wall deformities such as funnel chest and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), which in persistent cases can be treated surgically.
What they are known for
Before moving to Munich, Prof. Muensterer was Director of the Department of Paediatric Surgery at the University Medical Centre Mainz from October 2014 to September 2020. Part of his surgical training took place at Duke University in the United States. He is authorised to train doctors for the specialist qualification in paediatric surgery (authorisations granted in 2004 and 2019), which means that young surgeons qualify as paediatric surgeons under his supervision.
