Prof. Dr med. Andreas Flemmer (Prof. Dr. med. Andreas Flemmer) is Head of Neonatology at Dr. von Hauner Children’s Hospital (LMU) in Munich. Parents of premature and newborn babies turn to him when a child needs intensive care in the first days and weeks of life, followed by careful monitoring of development.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Flemmer is a specialist in paediatrics with a subspecialty in neonatology (the medical care of newborn babies). He is responsible for the care of premature and newborn infants at the hospital’s two sites, Grosshadern and the city centre. His patients are babies born too early or with a low birth weight, as well as full-term infants who need breathing or circulatory support or treatment of a serious infection immediately after birth.
Care for a newborn often begins before the birth itself: when a pregnancy carries known risks, the neonatal team is involved in advance so that a prepared team is there to receive the baby. This is followed by incubator care, respiratory support, the establishment of feeding and the treatment of the complications of prematurity, from immature lungs to problems with the bowel and the eyes. Parents are told what is happening at every stage so that they understand what is being done for their child.
What they are known for
The department led by Prof. Flemmer runs neonatal intensive care units at both sites. In the most severe cases of respiratory or cardiac failure, the team uses ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, a machine that temporarily takes over the work of a baby’s lungs and heart). After discharge, premature babies are not left on their own: a follow-up programme tracks growth and development so that any delay is noticed and addressed early.
