Prof. Dr med. Maximilian Kriegmair (Prof. Dr. med. Maximilian Kriegmair) is Chief Physician and Medical Director of the Urology Clinic Munich-Planegg near Munich and head of its uro-oncology centre. Patients come to him with cancer of the prostate, bladder and kidney, with an enlarged prostate, and when the ureter or urethra needs to be rebuilt after injury or previous operations.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Kriegmair has headed the Urology Clinic Munich-Planegg since February 2023. His main field is robot-assisted surgery with the da Vinci system: nerve-sparing removal of the prostate for cancer (preserving the nerves responsible for erection and continence), removal of the bladder with urinary diversion – including a new bladder built from bowel (neobladder) or a reservoir with an outlet at the navel – and organ-preserving operations for kidney tumours, in which only the tumour is removed and the kidney is kept.
For an enlarged prostate he performs laser enucleation (HoLEP – removal of the overgrown tissue with a holmium laser through the urethra, without an incision). A separate area of his work is reconstructive surgery of the ureter and urethra for strictures, scarring and the after-effects of injury. What they are known for
Maximilian Kriegmair studied medicine at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München and completed his clinical and academic training at the Medical Faculty Mannheim of Heidelberg University. At Mannheim University Hospital he was a senior physician in the Department of Urology and Urological Surgery, managing senior physician from 2018 to 2023 and head of the Mannheim bladder cancer centre from 2019 to 2023; Heidelberg University appointed him professor in 2020. He is a board-certified urologist with additional qualifications in drug-based tumour therapy and palliative medicine, and an investigator in clinical trials of medicines and medical devices. He is a member of the European Association of Urology (EAU), the German Society of Urology (DGU) and the South-West German Society of Urology, sits on the board of the EAU Section of Urological Imaging (ESUI) and on the board of the Urological Health Foundation.
