Dr med. Bernhard Liedl (Dr. med. Bernhard Liedl) is Chief Physician of Urology and head of the Centre for Reconstructive Urogenital Surgery at Urology Clinic Munich-Planegg. Patients consult him with urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse and the after-effects of prostate surgery, when bladder function must be restored.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Dr Liedl has headed urology in Planegg near Munich since November 2017 and leads the centre for reconstructive urogenital surgery. His central subject is restorative surgery: pelvic floor reconstruction in incontinence, bladder dysfunction and prolapse, and reconstructive surgery of the external genitalia. In severe incontinence he implants an artificial sphincter — a cuff replacing the weakened muscle ring of the urethra.
His second field is nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy: removal of the prostate in prostate cancer while preserving the nerve bundles on which continence and erectile function depend. Patients often come to him after an operation performed elsewhere, for an assessment and for corrective surgery. Work of this kind belongs to the demanding end of urology and needs a careful examination before any decision.
What they are known for
Bernhard Liedl studied medicine at LMU Munich and began as a resident in the surgical department of Dachau Hospital. From 1983 he worked at the university’s urological clinic, where from 1987 to 2006 he was senior and then leading senior physician and completed his training in special urological surgery. From 2007 to 2017 he headed the centre for urogenital surgery at the pelvic floor centre of the Munich-Bogenhausen surgical clinic. He has written 65 original articles and 40 book chapters, given 290 lectures, and edits the tumour manual on urogenital tumours. He received the video prize of the German Society of Urology and the poster prize of the South-East German Society, is a former president of the International Society for Pelviperineology, and belongs to DGU, EAU and the International Continence Society.
