ISAR Clinic Munich is a private general hospital in the centre of Munich, on Sonnenstraße by Sendlinger Tor; its German name is ISAR Klinikum. It has surgical departments, a heart centre, gastroenterology and an international office for patients from abroad.
It is neither Klinikum rechts der Isar, the university hospital of the Technical University of Munich (TUM), nor the psychiatric Isar-Amper-Klinikum in Haar: all three names refer to the river Isar, but they are separate hospitals.
A Private Hospital in Central Munich
ISAR Clinic Munich is a private hospital founded in 2008; it first operated as Isar Medizin Zentrum and has been called ISAR Klinikum since 2014. Its historic mid-19th-century building was designed by the architect Friedrich Bürklein as a maternity hospital. Its use changed several times during the 20th century, and the neo-Gothic structure has been preserved as a listed monument.
For a patient from abroad, «private» does not mean «private patients only»: the hospital treats both statutory and privately insured patients, while international patients pay according to an estimate. It is a small hospital, and every room has its own bathroom. Its quality management system is certified to ISO 9001 by DEKRA. For other options in the city, see hospitals in Munich.

Surgeons operate on the abdominal organs, thyroid and rectum and repair hernias, many through small incisions and some with the da Vinci robot. The orthopaedic team treats the shoulder, knee, hip and ankle, including sports injuries and osteoarthritis, with arthroscopy and joint replacement; for an overview, see orthopaedics in Germany. Spine surgeons treat herniated discs and narrowing of the spinal canal. Vascular surgeons treat narrowed leg and carotid arteries, aortic aneurysms and varicose veins. Plastic surgeons rebuild the breast after cancer, treat facial nerve paralysis and perform aesthetic operations.
Internal medicine covers cardiology and gastroenterology. The ISAR Herzzentrum heart centre offers cardiac catheterisation and stenting, ablation for rhythm disorders, catheter-based valve treatment, and cardiac CT and MRI. The German Cardiac Society (DGK) has certified it as a Chest Pain Unit, an emergency unit for heart attack patients. Gastroenterologists perform gastroscopy, colonoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound and ERCP, an endoscopic examination of the bile and pancreatic ducts, and treat liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease and digestive tumours. Urologists treat prostate conditions including cancer, bladder disease and kidney stones, partly with the da Vinci robot; see also urology in Germany.
Chief Physicians
Each department is headed by its own director, the equivalent of a chief physician. Prof. Dr. Alexander Leber directs the ISAR Herzzentrum heart centre and the Department of Cardiology. Prof. Dr. Franz Bader is director of General, Visceral and Minimally Invasive Surgery and a member of the hospital’s medical directorate. Dr. Matthias Hoppert, a specialist in orthopaedics and trauma surgery, heads Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery.
PD Dr. Ralf Rothörl, a neurosurgeon, directs Spine Surgery (PD is a German university teaching title). Prof. Dr. David Schilling heads Urology. Dr. Oliver Wolf, a specialist in surgery and vascular surgery, directs Vascular Surgery. PD Dr. Holger Seidl is director of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Gastrointestinal Oncology.
Rooms and Getting There
The hospital has single rooms and suites, double rooms and multi-bed rooms; every room has its own bathroom with a shower and is equipped for people with limited mobility. Single rooms, comfort rooms and suites are booked at a surcharge, and the estimate shows what it covers. Meals are ordered by tablet or smartphone, with vegetarian and vegan dishes every day.
The Sendlinger Tor and Karlsplatz (Stachus) stops are a few minutes’ walk away, and the main railway station is within walking distance too. Sendlinger Tor is a U-Bahn and tram hub. Relatives can stay at the hotel directly opposite: the hospital has a cooperation agreement with it. The exact route from the airport comes with the invitation.
Frequently asked questions
Is ISAR Clinic Munich the same as Klinikum rechts der Isar?
No, they are different hospitals. ISAR Clinic Munich (ISAR Klinikum) is a private general hospital on Sonnenstraße in the city centre. Klinikum rechts der Isar is the university hospital of the Technical University of Munich (TUM); its name means «on the right bank of the Isar». The psychiatric Isar-Amper-Klinikum in Haar is a third, unrelated hospital.
Does ISAR Clinic Munich accept patients from abroad?
Yes, the hospital has an International Office for them. Doctors first review the reports and scans, and the patient then receives an individual estimate. It is paid before treatment by bank transfer, credit card or in cash on site, with any fees borne by the patient. For the visa, the International Office confirms the planned treatment on request.
How much does treatment at ISAR Clinic Munich cost?
There is no fixed price: the hospital calculates the amount for each patient in an estimate (Kostenvoranschlag) once its doctors have reviewed the documents. The total depends on the diagnosis, the operation or examination, the length of stay and the room category, as single rooms, comfort rooms and suites cost more. The estimate is paid before admission and shows what it covers.
Do I need my own interpreter at ISAR Clinic Munich?
Yes. Patients arrange their own interpreter, and the hospital does not cover interpreting fees. Patients who travel with AlenMed are accompanied by the company’s interpreter at consultations and in conversations with the doctors. The hospital accepts reports and scans in German or English, so AlenMed translates the documents before sending them.
How AlenMed Arranges Treatment at ISAR Clinic Munich
AlenMed translates medical reports, test results and scans into German and sends them to the relevant department. Its doctors decide whether they can take the case, and the hospital issues an estimate (Kostenvoranschlag). The whole process is described on the page about arranging treatment in Germany.
The patient pays the hospital directly, and after the advance payment the hospital issues an invitation for the visa. An AlenMed interpreter attends the consultations, and the patient is met at the airport. AlenMed’s office is also in Munich; its partner hospitals are spread across Germany.
