Prof. Dr med. David Schilling (Prof. Dr. med. David Schilling) is Director of the Department of Urology at ISAR Clinic Munich. Patients consult him for prostate, kidney and bladder cancer, for kidney stones, and when they need a second opinion on a biopsy result or on whether an operation is necessary.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Schilling has headed the Department of Urology at the ISAR Clinic since June 2015. His main field is robot-assisted and minimally invasive surgery: the surgeon guides the instruments of the da Vinci system, which are introduced through several small ports, and can work precisely next to nerves and vessels. In this way he operates on prostate cancer and on tumours of the kidney and the bladder.
He also provides drug treatment for tumours of the urinary tract and removes kidney stones by minimally invasive techniques. A further focus is prostate MRI with fusion biopsy: the MRI images are matched with the live ultrasound picture, so that tissue is taken from the suspicious area under direct guidance rather than at random.
What they are known for
David Schilling studied at the universities of Innsbruck, Berlin and Munich, spent a research year at the Mayo Clinic in the USA and took his doctorate summa cum laude in 2003 in Munich. He trained in general surgery at the Cantonal Hospital of St Gallen and at the University Hospital of Zurich. For four years he was a senior physician and head of robot-assisted surgery and endoscopy at Tübingen University Hospital, where he completed his habilitation in 2011. In 2012 he moved to Frankfurt University Hospital, expanded the robot-assisted surgery programme there, worked as managing senior physician and coordinator of the tumour centre, and in 2014 was appointed professor at the Goethe University Frankfurt. He has published more than 100 papers, received the Werner Staehler memorial prize and poster prizes at the European and American urology congresses, and takes part in the development of new surgical instruments.
