Dr Ralf Rothörl — spinal surgery

Dr Ralf Rothörl

PD Dr med. Ralf Rothörl (PD Dr. med. Ralf Rothörl) is Director of the Department of Spinal Surgery at ISAR Clinic Munich and a specialist in neurosurgery. Patients consult him for herniated discs, narrowing of the spinal canal and back pain that has not settled with conservative treatment.

Where the doctor practises and what they do

Dr Rothörl has headed the Department of Spinal Surgery since 2013 and has been deputy medical director of the ISAR Clinic since 2011. He operates on all sections of the spine and works microsurgically: under the operating microscope, through a small approach, sparing the nerve roots and the spinal cord. This is how herniated discs, spinal canal stenosis, unstable vertebrae and tumours growing close to the spinal cord are treated.

Besides the spine, his work covers surgery for brain aneurysms, functional neurosurgery, neuro-oncology and operations on peripheral nerves. Many of his patients arrive after months of back and leg pain; how such complaints are treated in Germany is described on our page about chronic pain treatment.

What they are known for

Ralf Rothörl studied human medicine at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and took his doctorate in 1997 at the Ludwig Edinger Institute of Neuropathology. He then spent eleven years at the department of neurosurgery of Regensburg University Hospital, where he completed his specialist training and his habilitation and worked as a senior physician. From 2006 to 2008 he was a senior physician at the neurosurgical department of the Technical University of Munich at Klinikum rechts der Isar, where he built up functional neurosurgery. Since 2008 he has run his own neurosurgical practice in Munich and has advised patients of the ISAR Clinic. He has written more than 60 original scientific articles, reviews for several international journals, trained at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona, and belongs to professional associations of neurosurgeons.

How we arrange an appointment

AlenMed arranges the appointment with Dr Rothörl from your first message until you travel home. You send us an enquiry, we translate your medical reports and images into German, agree a date for the consultation or the operation at ISAR Clinic Munich, meet you at the airport and provide a medical interpreter and personal support for the whole treatment. Examinations and surgery are paid directly to the clinic at its official rates.

This material is provided for reference only and does not replace a doctor’s consultation. The possibility and the result of treatment are determined after an in-person examination.
