Prof. Dr med. Ayman Agha (Prof. Dr. med. Ayman Agha) is Chief Physician of the Department of General, Visceral, Endocrine and Minimally Invasive Surgery and deputy head of the bowel cancer and pancreatic cancer centres at Munich Hospital Bogenhausen. Patients come to him when an operation on the bowel, oesophagus, pancreas, adrenal gland or thyroid is due and should go through small ports rather than a long incision.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
He operates in Munich and shares responsibility for the hospital’s certified bowel cancer and pancreatic cancer centres. His main field is keyhole surgery for benign and malignant disease of the large bowel and rectum: diverticulitis (inflamed pouches in the bowel wall), rectal cancer, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and rectal prolapse. In ulcerative colitis and familial polyposis he removes the colon through small ports and forms a pouch.
The second part of his work is minimally invasive surgery of the oesophagus for reflux disease, achalasia (failure of the lower oesophageal sphincter to relax) and tumours, together with operations on the tail of the pancreas. Endocrine surgery forms a separate strand: adrenal tumours removed through a route behind the abdominal cavity, video-assisted surgery of the thyroid and parathyroid glands, and laparoscopic removal of the spleen, for example in lymphoma or immune thrombocytopenia.
What they are known for
He received his medical licence in 1997 and defended a doctoral thesis on therapeutic plasma exchange in acute necrotising pancreatitis the same year. He qualified as a specialist in surgery in 2000 and in visceral surgery in 2004, as a senior physician at Regensburg University Hospital, where he also led minimally invasive surgery. From 1998 he brought advanced laparoscopic techniques into routine practice, from 2003 the retroperitoneoscopic route to the adrenal gland and from 2009 single-port surgery. He operates live at international congresses and teaches colorectal surgery in Alexandria. He belongs to the German Society of Surgery and its minimally invasive and endocrine working groups.
