Prof. Dr med. Andreas Steinbrecher (Prof. Dr. med. Andreas Steinbrecher) is Chief Physician of the Department of Neurology and deputy head of the neuro-oncology centre at Helios Hospital Erfurt in Erfurt. Patients come to him after a stroke, with multiple sclerosis and other autoimmune diseases of the nervous system, and with tumours of the brain and spinal cord.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Steinbrecher has headed the department of neurology in Erfurt since May 2009. One of its main fields is acute stroke care: the department runs a certified supraregional stroke unit, where blood pressure, heart rhythm and neurological status are monitored around the clock in the first hours and a clot can be dissolved or removed. Closely linked to this is neurological intensive care.
He also works in neuroimmunology — diseases in which the immune system attacks the body’s own nerve tissue. The department is a certified multiple sclerosis centre, where long-term therapy is selected, changed and monitored over the course of the illness. Two further fields are neuro-oncology, in which he is deputy head of the hospital’s neuro-oncology centre, and cerebrospinal fluid diagnostics, which helps to distinguish inflammation from a tumour or an infection.
What they are known for
Andreas Steinbrecher studied medicine at Saarland University and the University of Göttingen and spent part of his practical year at Yale University. He began at the university neurology department in Tübingen and from 1996 to 1998 was a postdoctoral researcher in the neuroimmunology branch of the National Institutes of Health in the USA. He qualified as a specialist in neurology in 2000 and was a senior physician at the university hospital in Regensburg until 2009, where he completed his habilitation in 2006 and was appointed professor in 2020. From 2017 to 2020 he headed the neuromedicine group of the Helios hospital network. In 2024 he was certified as a specialist for multiple sclerosis and related disorders; he has chaired the hospital’s clinical ethics committee since 2022 and sits on the medical advisory board of the German Multiple Sclerosis Society.
