Dr Ioana-Maria Schonder (Doctor-medic Ioana-Maria Schonder) is Medical Head of Neurorehabilitation at the Gailingen site of Kliniken Schmieder. Patients come to her to recover after a stroke or brain haemorrhage, a traumatic brain injury or surgery for a brain tumour, and with multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and diseases of the peripheral nerves.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Dr Schonder heads the neurorehabilitation department of Kliniken Schmieder in Gailingen on Lake Constance. She is a certified neurologist with additional qualifications in social medicine and geriatrics, so her department is equally at home with young patients after an injury and with older people who have several conditions at once. The department’s main work is neurological rehabilitation after stroke and brain haemorrhage, after traumatic brain injury, in multiple sclerosis, after treatment for brain tumours, and in Parkinson’s disease and parkinsonian syndromes (conditions with similar symptoms but a different cause).
Dr Schonder also treats diseases of the peripheral nerves — polyneuropathy (damage to many nerves at once, usually in the feet and hands), Guillain-Barré syndrome and CIDP (acute and chronic inflammation of the nerves that causes weakness) — as well as muscle diseases and vestibular disorders (problems with balance and dizziness). Recovery is built from daily sessions with physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists and neuropsychologists, while the doctor keeps the overall picture in view, adjusts medication and decides when the patient is ready to go home. We arrange both the initial neurology in Germany and the subsequent rehabilitation with Dr Schonder.
What they are known for
Ioana-Maria Schonder is not only a treating physician but also a medical assessor: she prepares expert medical opinions and is qualified in traffic medicine, judging whether a patient with a neurological illness is fit to drive and to work. At the clinic she is the designated hygiene officer and has completed training in antibiotic stewardship (ABS Fellow, a programme that teaches prescribing antibiotics only where they are truly needed). Dr Schonder is a member of the German Society of Neurology (DGN).
