Prof. Dr Christos Haritoglou (Prof. Dr. Christos Haritoglou) is Lead Physician of the Herzog Carl Theodor Eye Clinic in Munich and a surgeon of the retina and vitreous body. Patients come to him with retinal detachment, diabetic eye disease, macular conditions and cataract – whenever an eye operation is needed and it matters who performs it.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Haritoglou has worked at the Herzog Carl Theodor Eye Clinic since April 2014 in a joint practice with Professors Schultheiß and Klink, and since 2015 he has led the clinic as its Lead Physician. His main field is surgery of the retina and vitreous body: he operates on retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy (damage to the small blood vessels of the retina caused by diabetes) and diseases of the macula (the central part of the retina responsible for sharp vision). His second large area is cataract surgery (replacement of the clouded lens), including refractive lens implants that correct eyesight at the same time.
He also performs surgery on the front part of the eye – corneal transplantation (keratoplasty) and removal of pterygium (a growth of tissue over the cornea) – and treats eye injuries. For retinal diseases he uses intravitreal injections (medication placed directly into the vitreous body) and laser treatment, including laser for secondary cataract. What they are known for
Christos Haritoglou studied medicine at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, obtained his doctorate and licence to practise in 1999 and qualified as a specialist in ophthalmology in 2003. From 2003 to 2014 he was a senior physician at the university eye hospital in Munich, completed his habilitation in 2004 and was appointed adjunct professor in 2010. He has been a member of the Club Jules Gonin since 2008 and of the Macula Society since 2012, and belongs to the AAO, ARVO, DOG, Euretina and the German Retinological Society. His awards include the Leonhard Klein Prize (2005), research prizes of the German Ophthalmological Society (2007, 2011), the Meyer-Schwickerath Prize (2009), the Achievement Award of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (2013) and the DOC Silver Medal (2023). He regularly organises surgical courses for ophthalmologists.
