Prof. Dr med. Luise Poustka (Prof. Dr. med. Luise Poustka) is the Medical Director of the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Center for Child and Adolescent Medicine Heidelberg. As a child psychiatrist, she specialises in neurodevelopmental conditions, with a primary focus on autism spectrum disorders. Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Dr med. Luise Poustka has served as Medical Director in Heidelberg since October 2023, contributing to children’s medicine in Germany. Her clinical practice centers on autism spectrum disorders and other neurodevelopmental conditions (disorders affecting brain development and neurological function). She conducts early detection and early intervention for affected children, alongside parent counselling and structured training designed to foster supportive family interaction.
What they are known for
Before completing her medical education, Prof. Dr med. Luise Poustka studied acting and directing at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. She subsequently completed her medical degree at the University of Heidelberg and undertook specialist training at Heidelberg University Hospital as well as the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. She served as a senior physician and deputy chief physician at the Central Institute of Mental Health in Mannheim, where she earned her habilitation. In 2015, she assumed the chair in child and adolescent psychiatry at the Medical University of Vienna, and in 2017 became head of the department at University Medicine Göttingen. In March 2024, she was appointed to the German Federal Government’s Expert Council on Health and Resilience. She is a board member of the German Society for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (DGKJP) and deputy president of the Scientific Society for Autism Spectrum Disorders, directing her research toward the underlying causes of autism and neurodevelopmental disorders.
