Prof. Dr med. Ulrich Spiegl (Prof. Dr. med. Ulrich Spiegl) is the chief physician of the department of trauma surgery, orthopaedics, hand and reconstructive surgery at Munich Hospital Harlaching in Munich. Patients come to him after severe injuries, with fractures of the spine including osteoporotic ones, with fractures in old age and with sports injuries.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
He heads the department in Munich. The first part of his work is the care of polytrauma, that is multiple injuries affecting several regions of the body at once, where the order of the operations has to be decided quickly. The second is trauma surgery in old age: fractures of the hip, pelvis and spine in people with fragile bones, where the aim is not only to heal the bone but to get the patient back on their feet early.
The third field is spinal surgery. He operates on fractures of the thoracic and lumbar spine, including osteoporotic ones, using stabilisation with screws and strengthening of the vertebral body with bone cement. The fourth is sports medicine: injuries of ligaments, tendons and joints. As principal surgeon of the endoprosthetics centre he also replaces worn joints, which is described under joint replacement in Germany.
What they are known for
Ulrich Spiegl is a specialist in orthopaedics and trauma surgery with further recognition in special trauma surgery, special orthopaedic surgery, sports medicine, emergency medicine and manual medicine, and has been appointed adjunct professor. Under his direction the department is authorised to train orthopaedic and general surgeons. He is deputy chair of the spine section of the German Society for Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery and deputy head of its working group on osteoporotic vertebral fractures, an elected board member of the German Spine Society, a member of AO Spine, AO Trauma and Eurospine, and sits on a trauma journal advisory board. His research deals with osteoporotic fractures of the mid-thoracic spine, cement augmentation of posterior stabilisation and the outcome of hip fractures in patients over ninety.
