Prof. Florian Lordick — oncologist

Prof. Dr Florian Lordick

Prof. Dr med. Florian Lordick (Prof. Dr. med. Florian Lordick) is Director of the Department of Oncology, Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Pneumology at Leipzig University Hospital in Leipzig. Patients come to him with tumours of the digestive organs and the lungs, and with chronic disease of the stomach, bowel and liver, when a treatment plan or a second opinion is needed.

Where the doctor practises and what they do

Prof. Lordick heads a department that brings together four fields: oncology, gastroenterology, hepatology and pneumology. For the patient this means that cancer treatment and the examination of the organ the tumour arises from happen within one structure: the oncologist, the gastroenterologist and the lung specialist discuss the case together rather than passing the patient from one department to the next.

Gastroenterology and hepatology within the department cover disorders of the stomach, bowel and liver, including endoscopic diagnosis, while pneumology covers diseases of the lungs and airways. Drug treatment of cancer — chemotherapy and modern targeted medicines — is chosen once the diagnosis has been confirmed and the extent of the disease assessed. Which course is possible in an individual case only becomes clear after an in-person examination and a review of existing scans and tissue samples.
