Prof. Dr Karl-Ludwig Laugwitz (Prof. Dr. Karl-Ludwig Laugwitz) is Director of the Department of Internal Medicine I (Cardiology, Angiology, Pneumology) at Rechts der Isar Hospital (TUM) in Munich. Patients come to him with coronary heart disease, heart rhythm disorders, heart failure, diseases of the blood vessels and lungs, and in situations where the heart needs intensive monitoring.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Laugwitz heads the Department of Internal Medicine I at the university hospital Rechts der Isar of the Technical University of Munich. The department’s main field is cardiology: diagnosis and treatment of heart disease, including catheter-based procedures on the coronary arteries and heart valves, and treatment of arrhythmias and heart failure. It also covers cardiac intensive care – the care of patients with heart attack, acute heart failure and other conditions in which the heart needs round-the-clock monitoring and support.
The department’s two further fields are angiology (diseases of the arteries and veins: atherosclerosis of the leg arteries, thrombosis, aneurysms) and pneumology (diseases of the lungs and airways: asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary hypertension). This combination is convenient for a patient whose heart, vessels and lungs are affected at the same time – examination and treatment take place in one department.
