Prof. Dr med. Stefan Böck (Prof. Dr. med. Stefan Böck, MHBA) is the chief physician of the department of haematology, oncology and palliative medicine at Munich Hospital Harlaching in Munich. Patients consult him when a tumour or a blood disorder has to be confirmed and drug treatment chosen, or when pain relief is needed alongside cancer therapy.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
He practises in Munich in the department of haematology, oncology and palliative medicine. The first part of his work is medical oncology: the diagnosis and drug treatment of solid tumours, including CUP syndrome (secondary deposits are found, but the primary tumour is not). The second is haematology: leukaemia, lymphoma, plasma cell tumours, benign blood disorders and disturbances of blood clotting.
The third area is palliative medicine, the relief of pain, breathlessness, nausea and other distressing symptoms in advanced disease. He is also licensed to give genetic counselling within his speciality, which matters when tumours recur in a family, and he is responsible for transfusion medicine in the hospital. We describe separately how cancer diagnosis in Germany is organised.
What they are known for
Stefan Böck is a specialist in internal medicine, haematology and oncology, with additional qualifications in internal intensive care medicine, emergency medicine and palliative medicine. From October 2019 to December 2021 he took a part-time degree in health care management at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, with a thesis on the certification of oncology centres in Germany. He belongs to the German Cancer Society, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the study group for gastrointestinal tumours, where he has sat on the pancreatic cancer steering group since April 2015. Since June 2018 he has served on the ethics committee of the medical faculty in Munich. He co-authored the German guideline on pancreatic cancer and papers in Nature and Cancer Discovery.
