Prof. Dr med. Daniel Seehofer (Prof. Dr. med. Daniel Seehofer) is Managing Director of the Department of Visceral, Transplant, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery at Leipzig University Hospital in Leipzig and head of hepatobiliary surgery and visceral transplantation. Patients come to him with tumours and other disorders of the liver, the bile ducts and the pancreas.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Seehofer’s main field is hepatobiliary surgery, that is, operations on the liver and the bile ducts. It includes liver cancer treatment, the removal of liver metastases, tumours of the bile ducts and benign growths. Before such an operation it matters how much healthy liver tissue will remain and whether it will cope; where necessary the procedure is divided into two stages.
His second field is visceral transplantation: transplantation of the liver and of other abdominal organs when the patient’s own organ can no longer do its work. He is also acting head of visceral surgery, which covers operations on the organs of the abdomen. The decision on which procedure to choose is taken at a joint tumour board together with oncologists, gastroenterologists and radiologists.
