Prof. Dr med. Dr h c Tienush Rassaf (Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h.c. Tienush Rassaf) is the director of the department of cardiology and angiology at Essen University Hospital. Patients consult him for diseases of the heart and vessels: angina, the consequences of a heart attack, heart failure, rhythm disorders and narrowed arteries in the legs and neck.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
He works in Essen and directs the department of cardiology and angiology, two neighbouring fields. Cardiology deals with the heart itself: narrowing of the coronary arteries, angina and heart attack, heart failure, valve defects, disorders of the heart rhythm and inflammation of the heart muscle. Angiology deals with the vessels outside the heart: narrowing of the arteries of the legs and neck, aneurysms, vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.
Keeping both fields in one department matters for the patient, because atherosclerosis rarely stays in one place: when the heart vessels are narrowed, the arteries of the legs or neck are often affected too. Examination and treatment at both levels then happen in the same department. We describe separately what cardiology in Germany covers and how atherosclerosis treatment and diagnosis is arranged.
