Dr Sebastian Rogowski — cardiology

Dr Sebastian Rogowski

Dr med. Sebastian Rogowski (Dr. med. Sebastian Rogowski, MHBA) is Chief Physician of the Department of Cardiology and Internal Intensive Care Medicine at Munich Hospital Bogenhausen. Patients consult him about coronary artery disease and valve defects, when the question is whether medication is enough, whether a catheter procedure is needed, and whether the aortic valve can be replaced without open heart surgery.

Where the doctor practises and what they do

He works in Munich, at the head of the Department of Cardiology and Internal Intensive Care Medicine. His main field is interventional cardiology: treating narrowed coronary arteries through a catheter, without opening the chest. He leads the structural heart disease service and performs transcatheter aortic valve implantation, the TAVI procedure, which is an option for patients for whom open surgery would be hard to bear.

His second strength is cardiac imaging. He performs echocardiography including three-dimensional studies, cardiac computed tomography and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, and during catheterisation he uses intravascular ultrasound and optical coherence tomography, methods that show the vessel wall from the inside and help choose the size and position of a stent. He holds certificates of the German Cardiac Society in heart failure and sports cardiology, so he also looks after patients with a weakened heart muscle and those who want to return to exercise after a cardiac event.

What they are known for

Dr Sebastian Rogowski is a specialist in internal medicine and cardiology with additional qualifications in internal intensive care medicine, emergency medicine and sports medicine. The German Cardiac Society has confirmed his training with five separate certificates: in interventional cardiology, cardiac computed tomography, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, heart failure and sports cardiology. That combination is rarely held by one doctor and means diagnosis, catheter treatment and follow-up can stay in the same hands. Alongside his medical training he completed a Master of Health Business Administration, which reflects his work as head of a hospital department.
