Prof. Dr med. Christian von Bary (Prof. Dr. med. Christian von Bary) is Chief Physician of the Department of Internal Medicine I — Cardiology and Pneumology at Red Cross Clinic Munich, and heads its centre for heart rhythm disorders and invasive electrophysiology. Patients consult him with atrial fibrillation, racing heartbeat and after a cardiac arrest.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. von Bary has headed cardiology and pneumology in Munich since July 2013, after leading its cardiology as senior physician. His central subject is heart rhythm disorders and their treatment by catheter ablation: a thin catheter is guided through a vessel to the heart and the small area triggering the abnormal rhythm is treated directly. In this way he treats atrial fibrillation and flutter, WPW syndrome (an extra conducting pathway in the heart) and ventricular tachycardia.
The second part of his work is implanting pacemakers and defibrillators, including leadless ones placed directly inside the heart without wires under the skin. He also fits occluders for the left atrial appendage and closure devices for a patent foramen ovale, which helps reduce the risk of stroke. He performs stenting in complex coronary artery disease and heads the centre for patients after sudden cardiac arrest, which matters in urgent cardiology.
What they are known for
Christian von Bary studied medicine at LMU Munich and worked as a resident and functional senior physician at the German Heart Centre Munich and at Klinikum rechts der Isar. At Regensburg University Hospital he was senior physician in cardiology and head of electrophysiology, and completed his habilitation on surgical and interventional strategies for atrial fibrillation. In November 2018 he was appointed adjunct professor at the University of Regensburg. He holds German Cardiac Society qualifications in special rhythmology and interventional cardiology, worked for years in ground and air emergency services, and belongs to DGK, ESC and EHRA.
