Dr Maximilian Hartel — orthopaedics and trauma

PD Dr Maximilian Hartel

PD Dr med. Maximilian Hartel (PD Dr. med. Maximilian Hartel) is Chief Physician of the Centre for Orthopaedics, Trauma Surgery and Sports Medicine at Munich Hospital Bogenhausen. His main subject is the pelvis and the hip: fractures of the acetabulum and the pelvic ring, revision surgery after a fixation that did not hold, and the exchange of a worn or loosened hip replacement.

Where the doctor practises and what they do

He operates in Munich, at the head of the Centre for Orthopaedics, Trauma Surgery and Sports Medicine. He carries out reconstructive surgery on the pelvic ring and the acetabulum — the socket for the head of the femur — and takes on revision operations when a first procedure has not held or the bone has healed crookedly. Trauma surgery for complex joint injuries belongs here too, for instance fractures of the tibial plateau and the ankle, where the joint surface has to be restored precisely.

The second strand is the hip: primary and revision joint replacement, and hip-preserving surgery that can postpone a prosthesis in younger patients. He also reconstructs tendons of the pelvis, hip and thigh after sports injuries.

What they are known for

He studied medicine at the University of Hamburg, after a year at Saint Mary’s College of California. From 2010 he worked at University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf, qualified as a specialist in orthopaedics and trauma surgery in 2013, became a senior physician in 2015 and led hip and pelvic surgery from 2016. Until 2026 he was leading physician and permanent deputy to the chief physician of trauma surgery, orthopaedics and sports traumatology at BG Klinikum Hamburg. He holds the additional qualifications in special trauma surgery and special orthopaedic surgery. In 2021 his study on sacral fractures in the elderly won the evidence-based medicine prize at the German orthopaedics and trauma congress. He publishes on the fixation of pelvic fractures and belongs to the German and European orthopaedic and trauma societies.
