Prof. Dr med. Christoph Kleinschnitz (Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Christoph Kleinschnitz) is the director of the department of neurology and professor of neurology at Essen University Hospital. Patients consult him for multiple sclerosis, after a stroke and in severe conditions where a disease of the nervous system has to be treated in an intensive care unit.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
He works in Essen and heads the department of neurology. He is a specialist in neurology and in neurological intensive care medicine. His first field is multiple sclerosis, a chronic inflammatory disease of the brain and spinal cord in which the immune system damages the sheath of the nerve fibres. What matters here is an exact diagnosis, an assessment of the activity of the disease on MRI, and the choice of a long-term treatment that keeps this activity down.
His second field is stroke, the sudden loss of blood supply to part of the brain, where the first hours decide the outcome and the work afterwards is to prevent a further one. The third is neurological intensive care: severe disturbances of consciousness, status epilepticus, brain swelling and breathing problems caused by a neurological illness. Christoph Kleinschnitz is a university professor of neurology and director of the department, and also holds a Master of Health Business Administration. His research deals with neuroimmunology, that is the part the immune system plays in diseases of the nervous system, with inflammation of the vessel wall and with thrombo-inflammation, the link between blood clotting and inflammation that explains why a vessel becomes blocked and why brain tissue is damaged.
