Prof. Dr med. Erdem Güresir (Prof. Dr. med. Erdem Güresir) is Director of the Department and Outpatient Clinic of Neurosurgery at Leipzig University Hospital in Leipzig. Patients come to him with tumours of the brain and the skull base, with aneurysms and other vascular disorders of the brain, with conditions of the spine and spinal cord, and with children who need neurosurgical care.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Güresir heads the neurosurgical department in Leipzig. His main field is surgery for brain tumours and for tumours of the skull base, the area through which the cranial nerves and the large vessels pass. His second field is neurovascular disease: aneurysms, vascular malformations and the consequences of bleeding inside the skull, where the decision is whether to operate openly or to close the vessel from within.
A third field is spinal neurosurgery: operations on the spine and spinal cord for disc herniation, narrowing of the spinal canal, tumours and instability. He also works in paediatric neurosurgery and in neurosurgical intensive care — the care of patients in the first days after major surgery or a haemorrhage. Procedures are carried out with computer assistance, that is, with navigation based on the patient’s scans, and with neuromonitoring, which checks the nerve pathways while the operation is under way.
What they are known for
Prof. Güresir is responsible for the clinical side of the Legend 3D printing research laboratory in Leipzig. In neurosurgery, 3D printing is used to produce a model of an individual patient’s anatomy so that the approach to a tumour or a vessel can be thought through in advance. This continues the main thread of his work: computer-assisted surgery and neuromonitoring.
