Prof. Wolfgang Thasler — visceral surgery

Prof. Dr Wolfgang E. Thasler

Prof. Dr med. Wolfgang E. Thasler (Prof. Dr. med. Wolfgang E. Thasler, FEBS, FACS) is Chief Physician of the Department of General, Visceral, Thoracic and Minimally Invasive Surgery and head of the bowel and pancreatic cancer centres at Red Cross Clinic Munich. Patients come to him with tumours of the abdominal organs and hernias, including cases after a failed earlier operation.

Where the doctor practises and what they do

Prof. Thasler has headed the surgical department in Munich since October 2015. His main field is surgical oncology of the digestive organs: operations for colorectal cancer and pancreatic cancer, and for liver and stomach tumours. He leads the certified bowel and pancreatic cancer centres, where a tumour board agrees the plan before surgery, not after.

Many of his procedures go through a few small incisions instead of one long one, which means less pain and a shorter recovery. Colorectal surgery is a field of its own — operations on the large bowel and rectum, including sphincter preservation where possible. He also repairs abdominal wall and incisional hernias, including complex and repeat cases.

What they are known for

Wolfgang Thasler studied medicine at LMU Munich from 1989 to 1996 and trained at the surgical clinic of Regensburg University Hospital. He completed his habilitation in surgery in 2006 and became an adjunct professor in 2013. At LMU Munich he headed colorectal surgery and the bowel cancer centre, was deputy clinic director and leading senior physician for general, visceral, transplant, vascular and thoracic surgery. In 2009 he worked as a senior surgeon in a development aid project at the National Referral Hospital in Thimphu, Bhutan. He is a specialist in surgery, general and special visceral surgery, coloproctology and surgical oncology (EBSQ), a senior bowel centre surgeon of the German Cancer Society, and a Fellow of the European Board of Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons.

How we arrange an appointment

AlenMed arranges consultations and surgery with Prof. Thasler for patients from abroad. You send us a request, we translate your records, histology, images and earlier operation notes into German, agree a date at Red Cross Clinic Munich and provide a medical interpreter for the consultation and the ward. We help with the visa, transfer and accommodation. Examinations and treatment are paid directly to the clinic at its official rates.

This material is for reference only and does not replace a consultation with a doctor. Whether treatment is possible, and what it can achieve, is determined after an in-person examination.
