Prof. Dr med. Florian Bassermann (Prof. Dr. med. Florian Bassermann) is Director of the Department of Internal Medicine III (Haematology and Oncology) at Rechts der Isar Hospital (TUM) in Munich. Patients come to him with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and other cancers of the blood, and with solid tumours that need drug treatment – from chemotherapy to cell-based therapies.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Bassermann heads the Department of Internal Medicine III at the university hospital Rechts der Isar of the Technical University of Munich. It is the department of haematology (diseases of the blood and blood formation) and medical oncology – the drug treatment of cancer, as distinct from surgery and radiotherapy. The department treats acute and chronic leukaemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma and other bone marrow diseases, and provides systemic therapy for tumours of the internal organs when the disease has spread and the whole body has to be treated.
All current forms of systemic therapy are available: classic chemotherapy, targeted drugs (which block specific faults in the cancer cells), immunotherapy (which helps the body’s own defences recognise the tumour) and cellular therapies. The last group includes CAR-T cell therapy, in which the patient’s own immune cells are reprogrammed in the laboratory and returned to fight the cancer, and blood stem cell transplantation – either with the patient’s own cells (autologous) or from a donor (allogeneic). What they are known for
Florian Bassermann combines clinical work with research: he heads his own laboratory at the department, the Bassermann Lab, which studies how cancers of the blood develop. The department itself is part of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Munich (CCCM), the German Cancer Consortium (DKTK) and the Bavarian Cancer Research Centre (BZKF). For patients this means that treatment decisions are taken at multidisciplinary tumour boards and that, where the diagnosis fits, participation in clinical trials of new drugs is possible.
