Prof. Dr med. Jörg Steinmann (Univ.-Prof. Dr. Jörg Steinmann) is the Director of the University Institute for Hospital Hygiene, Medical Microbiology and Clinical Infectiology at Nuremberg Hospital (Klinikum Nürnberg) in Nuremberg. Patients and clinical departments consult him for laboratory diagnostics, hospital hygiene, and the management of complex infectious diseases.

Where the doctor practises and what they do

Prof. Dr med. Jörg Steinmann has served as Director of the University Institute for Hospital Hygiene, Medical Microbiology and Clinical Infectiology at Nuremberg Hospital since 2017. He studied human medicine at Justus Liebig University Giessen between 1999 and 2005, obtaining his doctorate at the Institute for Hygiene and Environmental Medicine there in 2008. He worked as a senior consultant at the Institute for Medical Microbiology at University Medicine Essen in 2012, completing his habilitation in medical microbiology and hygiene at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Duisburg-Essen in 2014.

As a board-certified specialist in microbiology, virology, and infection epidemiology, Prof. Dr med. Jörg Steinmann oversees clinical infectiology, hospital infection control, and laboratory diagnostics for bacterial, viral, and fungal diseases. He also leads a dedicated research group focusing on microbiology in cystic fibrosis (a hereditary condition affecting the lungs and digestive tract).

Prof. Dr med. Jörg Steinmann has received multiple scientific honours for his work in medical mycology and hygiene, including the Hygiene Award of the Rudolf Schülke Foundation (2011), the Best Presentation Award (2014) and Research Promotion Award (2020) from the German-speaking Mycological Society (DmykG), and the Becton-Dickinson Research Award from the DGHM Foundation (2015). In 2017, he was named a Fellow of the European Confederation of Medical Mycology (FECMM). He is an active member of scientific organisations such as the German Society for Hygiene and Microbiology (DGHM), the International Society for Human and Animal Mycology (ISHAM), the Paul Ehrlich Society (PEG), the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID), the American Society of Microbiology (ASM), Mukoviszidose e.V., and the German Society for Infectiology (DGI).
