Prof. Dr med. Ulrich Laufs (Prof. Dr. med. Ulrich Laufs) is Director of the Department and Outpatient Clinic of Cardiology at Leipzig University Hospital in Leipzig. Patients consult him for coronary artery disease, heart failure, rhythm disorders and vascular disease, and when a second opinion on further treatment is needed.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Laufs heads the cardiology department in Leipzig. He is a specialist in internal medicine, in cardiology, in angiology and in internal intensive care medicine. That combination means the heart is assessed together with the vessels of the whole body: angiology is the medicine of the arteries and veins, so a narrowing in the leg arteries or the carotid arteries is examined in the same department as atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries.
His fourth qualification is internal intensive care medicine, that is, the care of patients with a heart attack, severe heart failure or dangerous arrhythmias in the intensive care unit. A consultation at the university hospital usually begins by confirming the diagnosis: an electrocardiogram, an ultrasound scan of the heart, exercise testing and, where needed, coronary angiography. Only then is it discussed what will help more — a change of medication, a catheter procedure or an operation.
