Prof. Dr med. Martin Pölcher (Prof. Dr. med. Martin Pölcher) is Chief Physician of Gynaecology and head of the gynaecological cancer centre at Red Cross Clinic Munich. Women consult him with tumours of the ovaries, uterus and cervix, including advanced disease, where a large and carefully planned operation is needed.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Pölcher has headed gynaecology at the women’s clinic in Munich since 2016, specialising in gynaecological oncology and minimally invasive surgery. Since 2013 he has led the interdisciplinary gynaecological cancer centre, certified by the German Cancer Society (DKG): the treatment plan for each patient is agreed by a tumour board rather than by a single doctor. Before that, from 2012, he headed the department for gynaecological oncology and minimally invasive surgery at the same clinic.
The main part of his work is surgery for ovarian cancer, including advanced forms where tumour deposits must be removed from several areas of the abdomen in one operation. He also operates on uterine cancer and cervical cancer, and works laparoscopically — through a few small incisions, which usually eases recovery. Complex gynaecological surgery is a separate strand of his work.
What they are known for
Martin Pölcher studied medicine at the Technical University of Munich from 1988 to 1995, qualified as a specialist in gynaecology and obstetrics in 2003, and in 2010 received the venia legendi of the University of Bonn for his habilitation on advanced ovarian cancer. From 2009 to 2011 he headed the gynaecological cancer centre of Bonn University Hospital, and until 2011 was executive senior physician and deputy director of its department of gynaecology and gynaecological oncology. He holds the examination certificate for ultrasound of the breast and female genital organs, sits on the AGO ovarian cancer commission, belongs to DGGG, AGO, DKG, DEGUM, AGE and ESGO, and has been principal investigator for international multicentre trials since 2007.
