Prof. Tobias Herold — haematology and oncology

Prof. Dr Tobias Herold

Prof. Dr med. Tobias Herold (Prof. Dr. med. Tobias Herold) is Chief Physician of the Department of Haematology, Oncology, Stem Cell Transplantation and Palliative Medicine at Munich Hospital Bogenhausen. Patients consult him about acute and chronic leukaemia and about lymphoma, often when the disease has returned after first-line therapy and the question is what treatment still makes sense.

Where the doctor practises and what they do

He has headed the department in Munich since April 2025. He treats acute and chronic leukaemia — diseases in which the bone marrow produces altered blood cells — and looks after patients with lymphoma, tumours of the lymphatic system. Blood cancer treatment in his department covers chemotherapy, targeted drugs and antibodies, and stem cell transplantation where it is indicated.

A particular strength is intensive and emergency care: with additional training in intensive care medicine, his department can look after seriously ill patients with treatment complications, infections and clotting disorders. He is also qualified to give genetic counselling within internal medicine — in lymphoma and leukaemia the molecular analysis of the tumour cells shapes the prognosis and the choice of drug. The department’s fourth strand is palliative medicine, the relief of symptoms once cure is no longer the aim.

What they are known for

He took his doctorate at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in 2008 with a thesis on gene therapy using a modified viral vector. From 2006 to 2020 he was a resident and research fellow at the university’s third medical department, qualifying as a specialist in internal medicine, haematology and oncology in 2015 and completing his habilitation on the molecular characterisation of leukaemia in 2017. Between 2018 and 2020 he researched haematopoietic stem cells at the Helmholtz Centre Munich, from 2020 to 2025 worked as a senior physician at the university hospital, and in 2022 was appointed adjunct professor. He belongs to the German and European haematology societies and to the study groups for acute myeloid leukaemia and lymphoma.
