Dr med. Martin Fuchs (Dr. med. Martin Fuchs) is Chief Physician of the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Gastrointestinal Oncology and head of the cancer centre at Munich Hospital Bogenhausen. Patients consult him about tumours of the oesophagus, stomach and bowel and about disease of the bile ducts and pancreas, often when the question is whether an early cancer can come out through the endoscope.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
He works in Munich and directs the hospital’s cancer centre and its visceral oncology centre. His main tools are endoscopy and endosonography — an examination from the inside with an ultrasound probe at the tip of the instrument, which shows how deeply a tumour has grown into the wall. On this rests digestive system diagnosis and the decision whether endoscopic removal suffices for an early cancer of the oesophagus, stomach or bowel.
A separate strand is disease of the gallbladder, bile ducts and pancreas, treated through the endoscope: clearing a blocked duct, placing stents, taking biopsies. He also treats motility disorders — achalasia (the lower oesophageal sphincter fails to open) and delayed gastric emptying — by cutting the muscle from the inside through the mouth, with no skin incision. As an oncologist he runs drug treatment for malignant tumours of the digestive organs, work that sits between gastroenterology and oncology.
What they are known for
He studied medicine at Heidelberg University and in Mannheim, where he wrote a doctoral thesis on pancreatic secretion and began as a research fellow. He qualified as a specialist in internal medicine in 1998 and in gastroenterology in 1999, and in 2003 added haematology and medical oncology with the drug tumour therapy qualification. Palliative medicine followed in 2009 and proctology in 2010. He has led the interdisciplinary oncology section since 2011 and the cancer centre certified by the German Cancer Society since 2014. He sits on that society’s certification committee for bowel cancer centres and has acted as principal investigator in international trials.
