Dr med. Stephan Gass (Dr. med. Stephan Gass) is Chief Physician of the Department of Trauma Surgery, Orthopaedics and General Surgery at Munich Hospital Schwabing in Munich. Patients come to him with fractures, including fractures in older people, with a worn and painful hip, and with injuries and disorders of the spine and pelvis.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Stephan Gass has worked in the department of trauma surgery and orthopaedics in Schwabing since 2004: as a senior physician from 2007, as leading senior physician from 2017 and as Chief Physician since 2020. One of his main fields is trauma surgery in older patients, where getting the patient back on their feet quickly matters most, so a fracture is usually fixed in a way that allows immediate weight-bearing. His second field is special trauma surgery, which covers complex and multiple injuries.
Dr Gass operates on the pelvis and performs hip joint replacement, in which the worn joint is replaced with an artificial one. A further focus of his work is spinal surgery: stabilisation after fractures, treatment of the consequences of injury and of degenerative change. Before surgery he discusses whether conservative treatment is still an option and how much of an operation is genuinely needed.
What they are known for
Stephan Gass studied medicine at Saarland University, the University of Freiburg and Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich. He began his clinical work at the surgical department of the Großhadern hospital, then moved to trauma surgery and orthopaedics in Schwabing, and from 2002 to 2003 worked in the department of visceral and thoracic surgery at the Neuperlach hospital. He is a specialist in surgery with the focus qualification in trauma surgery and additional qualifications in emergency medicine and in special trauma surgery. He is authorised to train doctors in orthopaedics, in basic surgical training and in special trauma surgery, and is a member of the German Society for Trauma Surgery and of the professional association of German surgeons.
